Adam Wedd – pink dinosaurs (2023)
When your music is described by Human League’s Martyn Ware as “the best song Leonard Cohen never wrote” and Ed Sheeran totally loves your stuff, then you’re onto something good. Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Adam Wedd has received such accolades and far more praise with his intoxicating melodies turning heads on an international scale. From the UK to Australia, France to Brazil, the USA and Canada, Adam Wedd is reaching audiences far beyond his UK borders AND has everyone grinning for hours while listening to his music.
Over the past five years, give or take, Adam Wedd has released original music to the masses (at least, according to Spotify) beginning with his 2018 EP People Places and Things, travelling along to 2020’s ‘Sylvia’s Song’, and ending with the most recent single ‘pink dinosaurs’. Following his 2023 single ‘whoever I please’, Wedd showcases his versatility as an artist shifting from an indie-rock-inspired melody to the indie-pop meets folk tone of ‘pink dinosaurs’. However, the continuation of an acoustic-influenced sound brings an intimacy many pop singles aim to achieve but not all succeed.
Recorded and produced alongside his friend Marek Deml, the new single sends listeners drifting off on a shimmering, glistening sonic river. Soft and soothing, the calm of ‘pink dinosaurs’ places you in a comfortable bubble of gentleness. Yet, while there is a strong sense of laidback tenderness, the rollercoaster melody sends powerful ripples across the smooth surface showing tumultuous waves beneath.
Adam Wedd explains that ‘pink dinosaurs’ is “a simple story-telling song about fighting for the ones you love. It’s the story of a divorced dad of two kids and about what happens when they come to stay with him.” for me, the melody of this new single perfectly expresses this complex situation. Seemingly simple on the surface but flooded with vulnerability beneath. Oscillating between a calm exterior and intricate emotions lying within, ‘pink dinosaurs’ is a sincere tribute to all the divorced parents out there.
In addition to the single, Adam Wedd released a lyric video for ‘pink dinosaurs’. You can view the video below or on his YouTube channel.
