about-faces – The River (2023)

Inspired by life in its totality, indie-rock group about-faces tackles love, lust and loss in moving melodies. In July, the UK-based foursome turned our head (and many other people’s heads) with their debut single ‘Under The Sun’. It was here they captured the painful sting of failed relationships in a poetic, moving tune. Drawn together with their passion for music as a cathartic tool for self-expression, escapism and solace, Sennen Ludman (vocals and guitar), Cormac Connolly (lead guitar), Nigel Ngwenya (bass), Danielle Capstick (keyboard and vocals), and Joseph Schofield (drums) found a slice in the indie-rock arena to lay their souls bare.

Not ones to be pigeon-holed, about-faces shift from an upbeat vintage indie-pop in ‘Under The Sun’ to heavier, harder and more forceful alternative rock in ‘The River’. Pounding drums accompany a resonant bass building a solid foundation to a kaleidoscopic arrangement. Searing guitars crash down with ferocity taking listeners on a rollercoaster ride with dips and crescendos. The rich vocals grab you navigating the sonic hurricane; however, just as everything is a tumultuous wealth of intoxicating noise, it all fuses together in an elegant roll of alternative rock.

Based on the two singles, it is clear about-faces makes a bold statement with their songs whether it is nostalgic pop or a swirling pool of rock. In ‘The River’, the group peaks again into human experience with a biographical narrative of self-love and discovery. Intimate and vulnerable, the vocals have a rawness to their execution; however, the melody engulfs you with empowering strength and hopefulness. Oscillating from darker turmoil to bright optimism, ‘The River’ is a cascading lilt of ripples and rushes.

“This is my love song to life…a love song to the moment; a love song to good friends; to memories; a love song to this world we call home; but most importantly a love song for living. Escaping to the country, visiting a friend I had not seen in a while, he opened my eyes to life. Imposter Syndrome was rife, but I felt the shackles release…I found myself cleansed from the mishaps of life and the tightening strain of routine…This song is designed to inspire people…and live every moment in this little time we have here.” – Sennen Ludman on ‘The River’
