A.Wake – Lemuria (2022)

Coming up with a debut single that crosses genres, tries to be innovative, and has a specific message and goal can be quite a tricky affair. Yet, that seems not to be a deterring element for South Yorkshire’s Anita Wake, aka A.Wake, whose debut single ‘Lemuria’ is exactly that.

First of all, Wake moves between dream and electro-pop with some elements not usually associated with either, which she calls “a song embedded with a healing frequency to stimulate the third eye chakra. It can help to improve your intuition, remember past lives and connect more easily to universal energy…” So, there is a specific spiritual element there and whether you share the same beliefs with A.Wake or not, she is able to present her views through music with passion and in a believable manner.

Wake’s combination of musical elements, the shift between electro and dream-pop, presents a good musical base for her other personal ideas, while at the same time, those other elements she carefully inserts there actually make her sound quite an individual one.

Anita Wake has worked in several bands playing bass and singing backing vocals, with this being her first solo project writing and singing main vocals. These previous musical experiences have obviously helped her come into this project with both experience and assuredness to actually come up with a song that has both a head and tail and is very much an intriguing listening experience. ‘Lemuria’ is quite a good indicator that we can expect more intriguing music from A.Wake. Maybe even our third chakra will be stimulated in the right way.
