A Chat with Soul Dolphin (13.10.21)
In 2017 long-time friends Sam Lev, Gregory James Wilson, Alexander James Herrmann and Geoffrey Vanover came together to create Soul Dolphin. With their unique psychedelic-rock sound, the quartet is garnering a global following being featured on several podcasts and playlists. We speak with the US-based band about their album Founders of the Modern World, musical backgrounds and being a domestic animal.
OSR: Why did you decide to pursue a career in music?
Soul Dolphin: Unfortunately, we all have jobs outside of music. I wish we could pursue careers in music, that would be incredible.
OSR: What is your favourite type of music?
Soul Dolphin: We love all kinds of music but we get really inspired by psychedelic Brazilian jazz-rock.
OSR: What is the inspiration for Founders of the Modern World?
Soul Dolphin: The inspiration for Founders was bits and pieces of everything: life, the universe, extra-terrestrial beings, multi-dimensional travel, gravity propulsion devices, stuff like that.
OSR: What was the recording process like for the new album?
Soul Dolphin: The recording process happens on a song by song basis. Sometimes we record the full band and other times different instruments at different times. Then the album is pieced together later from a pool of half-finished songs which we try to weave into some type of narrative or structure.
OSR: If you could change anything about Founders of the Modern World, what would it be and why?
Soul Dolphin: We wouldn’t change anything about it. It’s done. ?
OSR: What do you hope people take from this album?
Soul Dolphin: A great listening experience!
OSR: If you were any domestic animal, what would you be and why?
Soul Dolphin: Does it have to be a domestic animal? We would probably be a dolphin.
OSR: What do you think is the best way to discover music in the Internet Era?
Soul Dolphin: Music is everywhere, you just have to find something you connect with.
OSR: Do you have any future plans as Soul Dolphin?
Soul Dolphin: Make more music!
