A Chat with Neave Zaria (08.07.2020)
Neave Zaria is an up and coming artist from Guildford who became committed to her craft from an early age. She was brought up on classic jazz and soul singers which influences her sound. We sat down with Neave Zaria (NZ) to talk about her latest release ‘Never The Same’, her music and much more!
OSR: Who inspired you to make music?
NZ: To be honest, I have always loved playing instruments and singing songs. I dabbled in writing with my guitar when I was younger, but I have never decided to do it properly until a garden party where I sang a song. My manager discovered me there and gave me the confidence and the resources to begin making music. I have never looked back.
OSR: You were personally approached to compete on X-Factor at a very young age, why did you choose not to?
NZ: The reason I didn’t was simply because I was due to embark on my expedition to Mongolia. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I had been saving for years. I thought, if I was meant to be a singer, I will be one day, just not today.
OSR: If it was not for your music career, what would you be doing right now?
NZ: I’ve always wanted to work with animals, so potentially I would be at University but right now my sole focus is music and I am going to make it work.
OSR: Is there a story behind ‘Never the Same’?
NZ: Yeah! I had a fall out with someone very close who said some very hurtful things. We’re back on speaking terms now but it will never be the same!
OSR: Do you sing in the shower? If so, what songs?
NZ: I. Love. Singing. In. The. Shower! Who doesn’t?! It’ll depend on my mood, if it’s a sad shower then it’ll be Birdy or Emeli Sandé. On the contrary, if I’m hyped up, I’ll be piping out Aretha or ‘Milkshake’ by Kelis!
OSR: Do you intend touring after your album release date?
NZ: I would absolutely love to do a tour after an album release, but we need more of a fanbase!
OSR: Where would you like to tour and perform?
NZ: I would love to do a tour through America as my dream has always been to hire an RV and do a road trip, what better way to do it whilst stopping off for shows! Now, I would most definitely have to stop off in Mexico as that is where the majority of my fans are now, they are begging me to go!
OSR: What is the best advice you have been given relate to your music career?
NZ: Always believe in yourself, no matter what happens. Don’t give up, focus on what you want and it will happen.
OSR: Explain your creative process?
NZ: My producer Chas will often come up with a piano or guitar riff, sometimes a whole musical backing with drums and bass, and then give it to me and I will write some lyrics. Sometimes I have an idea on the piano and will give it to him to expand, it usually works like that.
OSR: What are your plans for the future?
NZ: My plans for the future are to keep putting music out there, to grow my fan base and get gigging!
