A Chat with Marble Mammoth (18.11.20)

Based in Stockholm, Sweden, Marble Mammoth is one mammoth of an indie-rock band. Following up the critically acclaimed single ‘Have The Sun Lick Your Mind’ (read our review here), the awesome foursome release ‘Higher Than The Sun’. We speak with the band about their new single, the official music video and much more!

OSR: What can you tell us about your single ‘Higher Than The Sun’?

Marble Mammoth: It’s sort of a modern take on the Icarus myth. A song about always wanting more and chasing kicks. Originally, it was a lot longer and had this groovy middle section. It was a good groove, but in the end, we felt that the song was better off just being this kind of short but highly intense rock song. A kick to chase itself.

OSR: What was the writing and recording process like?

Marble Mammoth: We recorded a lot of songs during a short period of two days in the studio. We were on a tight schedule to get everything done in time but for most of the songs we still did a couple of takes, except for this one. The song is a first take and we think that you can hear that coming through in the recording.

OSR: Marble Mammoth has released several singles over the past few years. Which is your overall favourite and why that one?

Marble Mammoth: Oh, impossible question! It varies from day to day. Which one is your favourite?

OSR: What can you tell us about the official music video?

Marble Mammoth: The video was directed and shot by the brilliant Öhman Spjuth. He used this old DVCAM with a fisheye lens that we all thought gave it this grimy look that really suited the song. In front of the camera, you can see Linus Nordström playing this guy filled with anxiety. We’re really happy about how it turned out. We’ve always wanted to do a video that focuses on a strong narrative rather than just playing in front of a camera.

OSR: Did you face any challenges when recording the video?

Marble Mammoth: Well, except for a zero budget, limited time and broken lights, everything went pretty smooth. Can’t stretch how thankful we are towards Gustav and Linus for coming through for us and being such pros.

OSR: If you could change one thing about the video what would that be?

Marble Mammoth: Honestly, nothing. With more money and time we could have done something different or grander, but not necessarily better. We think that the video matches the song perfectly, maybe just because of those circumstances.

OSR: If you could meet anyone dead or alive who would you like to meet?

Marble Mammoth: John Lennon. Don’t know if we would have such a fun time, but still…it’s John Lennon!

OSR: Describe your personality using one word.

Marble Mammoth: Impulsive.

OSR: Do you have a message for our readers?

Marble Mammoth: Oh, well it’s corona times, so just try not to lose hope. Soon there will be live gigs and cultural events to attend.
