A Chat with Lucas Writer (16.08.23)

Growing up surrounded by a family of musicians, it was more than likely that Lucas Writer would pursue a career in music. Since 2015, the US-based artist has been bringing a “fresh young energy to engage his listeners” both as part of the hip-hop duo New Leaders and as a solo artist. We speak with Lucas Writer about his new EP A Cheesy EP, superpowers, making music and achievements.

OSR: What inspires you to make music?

Lucas Writer: What inspires me to make music is the simple fact that I can take an idea, a feeling/emotion, a current event, a past event, a certain experience and turn it into a song that can evoke the same feelings and emotions that was felt during that specific situation or moment.

OSR: What does music mean to you?

Lucas Writer: Music is a release and it’s a place where I feel the most free. When I’m writing or recording music I feel the most like myself. It’s definitely a happy place for me and it allows me to get a lot off my chest that would be hard to communicate in a simple conversation.

OSR: What can you tell us about your EP A Cheesy EP? Is there a backstory or theme to it?

Lucas Writer: Back in 2020, I had the idea of releasing an EP. I didn’t have the name of the EP or even all the finished songs. All I had was a fully completed song and a song that was halfway finished. Over the course of three years between writing and recording, I came up with the name, finalized the songs, and locked in with the featured artists. A Cheesy EP consists of four love songs that give a condensed version of the making of a relationship between two people from beginning to end. Each song marks the stage in the relationship with the first song ‘Brunch’ being the introduction stage. The second song ‘Girlfriend’ is the official stage. The third song ‘Day Trip’ which is the lead single is the adventure/exploration stage. Lastly, ‘No Worries’ is the security/stability stage of the relationship.

OSR: What do you believe makes you unique as an artist?

Lucas Writer: What makes me unique is that I’m not portraying a false image or promoting a fake narrative. I’m true to who I am and the morals and values that I believe in and hold tight to. I’m literally the definition of “what you see is what you get.” I’m the same person whether I’m on or off the stage. Music is a part of my life but it doesn’t define me as a human being. I’m more than the gifts that I’m blessed to have. I steward my gifts in order to motivate and inspire others to do the same.

OSR: What is the most exciting and least exciting thing about making music?

Lucas Writer: The most exciting thing about making music is getting a song to sound exactly like it did when you first get that idea or feeling. The worst part about making music is overthinking and second-guessing your own abilities.

OSR: What do you hope people take from A Cheesy EP?

Lucas Writer: I hope A Cheesy EP gives a feeling of nostalgia and calmness. I hope that this EP  will allow you to find love within yourself and for the people around you. I hope you can vibe out to the music and that it becomes a soundtrack for where you are currently. I see so much happening in our world that I wanted to make an EP that allows people to breathe and unplug. Whether you’re blasting the EP, working out to it, driving with it on, or recommending it to a friend. I want all who listen to love themselves first and to show love no matter the circumstance.

OSR: If you were gifted with a superpower, what would it be and why?

Lucas Writer: Invisibility. I’ve always been a low-key/mysterious type of person in the sense that I like it when people don’t know what to expect next from me. I like to surprise people and show a side of me that they didn’t expect. Honestly, I just like my quiet time and being able to not be seen. I don’t need to be in the mix of everything so I like to reflect and be a place of solitude.

OSR: What is your greatest achievement?

Lucas Writer: My greatest achievement is showing my parents that music can be an actual career and that it can open the doors for other opportunities outside of the music industry.

OSR: If you were stranded on a desert island, what three items would you take (no boats or cell phones)?

Lucas Writer: A knife, a fishing rod, and the Bible.

OSR: Do you have future plans as a musician?

Lucas Writer: I’m currently looking to release my next EP before the year is out. I have two songs that are complete out of 6 songs total. I’m waiting for features and I’m still fine-tuning some songs but I’m almost completely finished.
