A Chat with Lexytron (10.04.25)
Discovering her passion for music early on, Lexytron quickly found an identity as a pianist and violinist; however, there was much more than merely a talented instrumentalist. At the age of 5, UK-born Lexytron described herself as “half Greek, half Persian, and half English” – little did she know this mesh of cultures, life experiences, and influences would manifest in a genre-diverse, experimental, pretty much anything goes musician. We speak with the New Zealand-based singer-songwriter about her new single, ‘Kiss Me Quick’, advice for new artists, upcoming plans, and much more.
OSR: Cliche, but can you tell us what drew you to music? How did Lexytron come about?
Lexytron: I’ve always loved music since I was little. My mum enrolled me for piano lessons at age 6, and I started violin when I was 7. My dad played lots of different music in the house – anything from 60s rock, folk, Greek or panpipe music – and my sister was playing lots of indie rock and grunge at the time. As I got older, I caught the live music bug and met my now husband, who was playing lead guitar in his own indie band in Manchester. By that time, I’d already been writing my own songs but didn’t have the confidence to do anything with them until we sat down together one day and he agreed to produce them for my first album.
OSR: You recently released your single ‘Kiss Me Quick’. What can you tell us about the track? Was there any backstory or concept?
Lexytron: ‘Kiss Me Quick’ is a one-sided love song, and it comes as someone is waking up from a relationship to the reality that it’s time to walk away. I took the lyrics and chords to Mike, and he created a dreamy soundscape to match this concept. An image I had in my mind when writing the song was of an old friend who wore a baggy male shirt for a ‘music and movies’ dress-up party. She said she was the ‘morning after girl’ from all the romcoms. That stuck with me
OSR: What do you hope people take from ‘Kiss Me Quick’, and what does the song mean to you?
Lexytron: I hope people dig into the lyrics and pull their own meaning out. A radio DJ aptly observed that ‘Kiss Me Quick’ used to be printed on hats worn at British seaside resorts like Blackpool to toast a carefree holiday romance. I love how he arrived at that imagery when he heard the song. I also hope people enjoy just the lush sound of it! The song means the start of a new era for Lexytron and I’m excited!
OSR: What is your creative process, and which do you find more challenging – lyrics or melody?
Lexytron: I write lyrics and music together. Sometimes lyrics or lines come that I bank for when I sit down with an instrument. ‘Lexytron’ was originally a solo project, but I promoted Mike this time around because I wrote lyrics to one of his riffs on this new album, and one song was purely his composition. That was probably the biggest challenge for me, coming into the co-written song like one of those professional songwriters and laying over a melody and lyric line without any idea of what the song was going to be about. It was fun and something I’d be keen to try more of! I actually think it’s probably the best song I’ve written.
OSR: What does music mean to you?
Lexytron: Probably similar to most people. It’s soundtracked my life. I hear a song and I associate it with a time/place/feeling. I’ve had some of my best nights because of music. I’ve made some of my best friends because of music. I’m the geek who gets the music questions right on the pub quiz. It’s undeniably a big part of my personality.
OSR: Looking at Spotify, ‘Kiss Me Quick’ appears to be your first studio release since 2020’s Something Blue. Why the break in releasing music, and do you think ‘Kiss Me Quick’ is a true representation of you at the moment?
Lexytron: We lost an immediate family member a few weeks after I released Something Blue, which was during COVID, and we worked on this new music during that time. By the time most of the album was together, I became a mum and my focus went on my baby and my job. We also had a big health scare, which rocked us this last year. I wasn’t sure I was going to put the album out at all by that time, but then I got re-inspired by working on the sessions again with a couple of my close friends last summer and realising it was time to let go! It was meant to be, and I’m so happy they are now on the album.
As to whether it represents me, after having a child, you assume a new identity, but this music reminds me of who I am at the core of it, even with these different hats I wear now. My child loves the song too, so that’s cool!
OSR: How would you describe your music?
Lexytron: It’s guitar music but with bits of different genres like folk, pop, alternative, punk, and rock n roll. It’s probably better for me to let others describe it than me!
OSR: What advice do you have for emerging artists?
Lexytron: Don’t hold back. You only live once. Make things happen. And do as much as you can before you have a child!
OSR: What can we expect from Lexytron in the future?
Lexytron: I’ve got a new album, Something New, coming out later this year, and more singles to follow. I’m doing some cool things to promote the album, like talking to you, and I’m excited to make this music into a dialogue after living with it for so long. The rest of what happens is up to the audience!
OSR: Do you have a message for our readers?
Lexytron: Check out ‘Kiss Me Quick’ and a few of my older tunes on Spotify and see if it’s your bag! The new album will be different, but if you’re digging my vibes, then join the ride!
