A Chat with Laurelight (15.06.23)
From synth-pop to disco funk and alternative pop-rock, Italian singer-songwriter Laurelight is brimming with eclectic sounds and melodies. We speak to the UK-based musician about his EP The Tunnel, what he would do if he were invisible, future plans and more!
OSR: Why did you decide to pursue a career in music? What drew you to music?
Laurelight: I was born with the presence of music inside me. As I was growing up, songwriting came up naturally as a necessity to express; that’s how I started my music career.
OSR: What does music mean to you?
Laurelight: Music is a choice that I made hence regards all the good and bad things in life that surround me as they are the subject of inspiration.
OSR: What can you tell us about your EP The Tunnel? Is there a theme or backstory?
Laurelight: The Tunnel is the metaphor of an introspective journey where the main character, whose presence is subject to several adversities, pursues a way out towards the light.
OSR: What do you hope people take from The Tunnel?
Laurelight: I hope people will listen to The Tunnel with an open heart and mind. The story behind the EP is universal so that anybody can portray themselves as the main character of the story based on their life experiences.
OSR: If you could change one thing on the EP, what would it be?
Laurelight: Maybe re-record ‘Peaceful’ with a lower key. Haha.
OSR: If you could listen to one album for the rest of your life, which album would it be and why?
Laurelight: From Elvis in Memphis – Elvis Presley (1969). Elvis has been one of my idols since I was a kid, also this album includes all the music genres I love the most.
OSR: What are two things you would do if you woke up to find yourself completely invisible?
Laurelight: I’d travel all over the world and go to all events for free. Haha.
OSR: What advice do you have for upcoming musicians?
Laurelight: When you think you’ve written a great song, always know the best one still needs to be written.
OSR: If you don’t know the words to a song or forget them, do you improvise?
Laurelight: Forever and ever.
OSR: What future plans are in place for Laurelight?
Laurelight: For the rest of the year I’ll keep gigging in between the UK and Italy and will drop The Tunnel Live Sessions series recorded live in studio with an 8-piece band.
