A Chat with Inbetween Honey (15.03.23)
Described by Indie Buddie as an “exhilarating slice of indie-rock”, Irish group Inbetween Honey is sharing their engaging, exciting and enchanting sound with the masses. We speak with the group about their EP Ludlow Street, what music means to them, and future plans.
OSR: What made you decide to begin making music?
Inbetween Honey: From JohnPaul and Matty’s point of view, watching live videos and documentaries of bands such as Oasis and The Stone Roses and going to the latter in Phoenix Park in 2012. JohnPaul and Matty knew they needed a singer for the band and had hit the jackpot when hearing a cover of a song by The 1975 that Dylan had posted on Facebook and not too long after we asked him to join the band. Matty, JohnPaul and Dylan have been playing music together since 2015 and the love grew and grew now with Blayne and Darragh on board we’re writing and recording the best music we’ve ever had.
OSR: What does music mean to you?
Inbetween Honey: If we didn’t have music in our lives it would be an incredibly boring place to be. It means a lot to us five lads that we can down tools for two hours a few times a week and get together to play music in our rehearsal space in the Melady shed as well as play a gig or two come the weekend.
OSR: What do you hope people take from your music?
Inbetween Honey: We like our music to be an escape. We’d like to think we give people a sense of enjoyment and thrill for them 3 or 4 minutes.
OSR: What can you tell us about your EP Ludlow Street? Is there any specific theme or backstory?
Inbetween Honey: Ludlow Street details the life of a young adult in County Meath working their way through different challenges when it comes to relationships at that young age with the focus at the start being built around an establishment on Ludlow Street in Navan.
OSR: Did you face any challenges when recording Ludlow Street?
Inbetween Honey: Too many songs to choose from was the main issue we encountered and trying to knock the track listing down to four songs.
OSR: If you could change anything about Ludlow Street, what would it be?
Inbetween Honey: Well it maybe could’ve been a debut album instead of a debut EP but we weren’t getting that excited! There’s nothing we would change in a big way as we felt this was the most creatively free we felt recording music where in the past we were messing with track length and overcomplicating certain aspects of songs when nothing really had to be changed. “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it!”
OSR: What is your greatest achievement (and it doesn’t have to be music-related)?
Inbetween Honey: Playing Electric Picnic in 2019 just before the Covid pandemic has to be the band’s biggest achievement to date. We remember getting the phone call that summer, the local paper with a full-page write-up on the band and then our debut single coming out all within the space of two weeks! The last week of August and the first week of September 2019 were hectic but incredibly enjoyable!
OSR: If you had to recommend one song from your new EP, which would it be and why?
Inbetween Honey: From Dylan’s standpoint he would pick ‘Little More’ – a real boppy 90’s sounding tune with sitcom theme tune vibes.
Matty would be telling you all about the raw energy and stadium anthem power of ‘Sunny Banus’.
Darragh and Blayne would tell you about the 80’s synth rock vibe to ‘Pingin’
Where I, JohnPaul, would tell you about the classic rock belting tune that is ‘Ludlow Street’.
OSR: What do you do in your spare time?
Inbetween Honey: We all work either work full-time, part-time or are in college. We all enjoy going to gigs in our spare time and spending time with each other outside of the band as well as the odd breakaway!
OSR: Do you have any future plans as Inbetween Honey?
Inbetween Honey: Play as many gigs as possible and record as many songs as we can. The dream of an Irish band of course is always to play at Slane Castle in some capacity as well as playing the biggest festivals and venues around the world.
OSR: Do you have a message for our readers?
Inbetween Honey: We hope you enjoy our debut EP and know there’s much more to come and we hope to come play in a town near you very soon!
