A Chat with Fish and Scale (20.07.23)

Encapsulating the mystical wonderment of folk music, German musician Fish and Scale (also known as Roland Wälzlein) searches for fulfilment and freedom in his tender melodies. We speak with Fish and Scale about his EP Wonderful, what music means to him, life experiences and much more.

OSR: Cliché question but what drew you to music? What made you decide to pursue a career in music?

Fish and Scale: It was not a decision, I just followed my passion. 🙂

OSR: What does music mean to you?

Fish and Scale: Music can be a doorway to a mystical world in us, it could lead us to a place full of miracles,
I try to go there more and more and music helps me on this way.

OSR: What can you tell us about your EP Wonderful? Is there a backstory or theme to it?

Fish and Scale: Most of my songs are inner dialogues between the mind and an all-knowing inner entity. The new EP Wonderful describes the search for fulfillment and the final insight that everything we are looking for is already there and no longer needs to be found, because it is within us.

OSR: If you could change one thing about Wonderful, what would it be and why?

Fish and Scale: There is nothing to change. 🙂

OSR: What do you hope people take from your music?

Fish and Scale: Maybe they are just as touched by the songs as I was when I wrote them.

OSR: What was the most exciting thing about creating the video?

Fish and Scale: There are orbs in the video. 😉

OSR: What life experiences have helped you grow into the person you are now?

Fish and Scale: There are experiences in my life that influence my songwriting, especially the ones where I experienced life in full depth.

OSR: What is one thing you are truly grateful for?

Fish and Scale: I am grateful that I was able to experience what it means to recognise being here.

OSR: Do you have future plans as Fish and Scale?

Fish and Scale: Hopefully a tour through the USA one day.

OSR: Do you have a message for our readers?

Fish and Scale: Yes… give a try to my music.
