A Chat with Eva No (28.10.23)

Blending the bites of electropop with the soothing caress of dream pop, singer-songwriter Eva No brings her own brand of refreshing pop to audiences. We speak with her about her EP Stainless Steel, what music means to her, future plans and much more!

OSR: Why did you decide to pursue a career as a musician? What drew you to music?

Eva No: As a child, I played classical piano, but I was really no good at it. In my late teens, I was a singer in a local band, and I have been writing songs ever since. Later on, I started writing songs for other artists, but the competition was fierce, and it was extremely difficult to find artists who wanted to record and release them. When it didn’t turn out the way I planned, I gave it up and decided to release the songs myself instead.

OSR: What does music mean to you?

Eva No: To me, music is larger than life, and it can amplify all your feelings. A great song will give you the chills – it can make you relax, give you energy, make you feel happy, or sad.

OSR: You recently released your EP Stainless Steel. What can you tell us about it?

Eva No: I believe it’s the natural next step after my last EP. I wanted to continue the electropop sound that my brilliant music producer Peter Hägerås created on my EP  Batteries.

OSR: How would you describe your music and the EP?

Eva No: I would describe my music as Swedish pop: songs with simple but strong melodies, preferably with an infectious chorus and simple, straightforward lyrics. I would say that all my songs are basically pop songs, sprinkled with influences from different genres and styles. So, my Stainless Steel EP can be described as Swedish pop with electropop vibes, although the song ‘Warriors of Love’ is more of a classic arena anthem.

OSR: What do you hope people take from Stainless Steel?

Eva No: The song ‘Stainless Steel’ is about overcoming hardships in life, another way of expressing “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”. ‘Beautiful Baby Girl’ is about wanting to protect your child from all evil, even though you know it’s impossible. ‘Warriors of Love’ is about spreading the message of love. I hope that all these songs can create some kind of reaction and make people relate to their personal experiences.

OSR: Do you think Stainless Steel is a good representation of your sound and where you are as an artist?

Eva No: Yes, I do, at least where I am right now. But I like to try new things, so my music might sound different in the future.

OSR: If you could change one thing about Stainless Steel, what would it be?

Eva No: I wouldn’t change a thing! I think it’s perfect the way it is. I can’t think of anything that could make it any better.

OSR: Random questions: If you could instantly learn any language, what would it be and why?

Eva No: I would really like to speak Italian fluently, it’s such a beautiful language.

OSR: What is something that never fails to make you laugh?

Eva No: Funny animal videos! If they’re done with respect for the animals, of course.

OSR: What are your future plans as Eva No?

Eva No: Having released three EPs, my current goal is to complete a full album. But the difficult part is to find the time to do it. But I guess you just have to start the work and see where it leads you.

OSR: Do you have a message for our readers?

Eva No: Be kind to yourself! Don’t let life stress you out.
