A Chat with Etham (12.12.23)
If you haven’t heard of Etham before now, then you’re in for a great discovery! After only a few short years, singer-songwriter Etham has carved a niche in modern-day pop music. Blending elements of indie-pop, folk, and pop-rock, the UK-based artist can hardly be defined and is completely unforgettable. We speak with Etham about his EP Patterns, future plans, what music means to him and more!
OSR: What does music mean to you?
Etham: It’s my whole life and just so grateful I get to it every day.
OSR: What inspires you to create music?
Etham: So many things, stories you hear about, stories you go through and also just the excitement of finding that melody that marries so well with what you want to say.
OSR: You have just recently the EP Patterns. What can you tell us about it? Is there a particular theme or backstory?
Etham: The EP is just experiences that I’ve been through in song form and the things I’ve been through I know are very common like heartbreak/loss/self-worth, and so to write music about it just feels right. I hope people find comfort in the things I’m singing about.
OSR: You released an official music video for the title track of Patterns. What can you tell us about the video?
Etham: It was just a really simple idea I had and it was to just walk the streets of London because the song is about a dysfunctional relationship, and in those times I found myself just walking everywhere trying to get a clear mind and think things through. It felt fitting to do the thing I do when I’m in a weird place.
OSR: What was the most exciting and least exciting thing about making the music video for ‘Patterns’?
Etham: I think working with the crew was the best thing because everyone was just so great and made really good friends. The least exciting or the worst part about it was trying to get shots in the middle of the road. There were a lot of cars but we had fun with it.
OSR: Do you think Patterns is a good representation of your sound at the moment?
Etham: Yeah, I think ‘Patterns’ is one of my favourite songs. I’m really happy with how it turned out and how it reflects the music I want to make.
OSR: What do you hope people take from your music?
Etham: I think comfort in knowing that the things I’m singing about are things a lot of people go through. Hopefully, it makes them feel not as alone.
OSR: Random questions: what do you know is bad for you, but you continue to do it
anyway?
Etham: Drink too much coffee.
OSR: What do you like best about yourself?
Etham: I think the feelings I get when making a song. It’s kinda uncontrollable and I guess I’m pretty happy that that feeling comes naturally.
OSR: What can we expect from Etham in the future?
Etham: A lot more songs, a lot more projects and hopefully a lot more shows!
OSR: Do you have a message for our readers?
Etham: Thank you for reading my interview! Just thank you so much for listening to and supporting my music, it means the world!
Many thanks to Etham for speaking with us! Find out more about Etham on his Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Spotify.
