A Chat with Dream Pony (03.04.24)
Drawing together the natural talents of singer-songwriter Jordan D’Arsie and drummer Aaron Mika, later joined by Supremo Massiv on bass, Dream Pony is a kaleidoscopic dawn of burning music flooding into your life. A splash alternative rock with dabs of synth-pop, pop-rock and indie-rock, the US-based group is not to be pigeonholed. We speak with Jordan D’Arsie about Dream Pony’s new album Suspicion Today, what music means to him and upcoming plans.
OSR: How did Dream Pony come about and what made you choose the band name “Dream Pony”?
D’Arsie: So, Aaron and I were introduced to each other by our producer Rocio. She knew both of us individually and wanted to get us together because she felt that we would really gel. We met up for a few beers and after the session it was decided we’d make the record. The name Dream Pony came from a few different things. My love of Suicide’s music and future track ‘clothes horse’ and walking around, and then I had a dream about those things and woke up and it had come to me.
OSR: You recently released your album Suspicion Today. What can you tell us about the album?
D’Arsie: Well, we’re very excited to share it with people, it’s been living in our world for some time and it’s about time it’s out there for others to listen to. We are hopeful we have created something hopeful for people and it resonates and makes them feel a sense of anything can happen. We’re thankful FOLC Records came onboard to release our debut, we’re big fans of the label and are grateful to be amongst bands we love and believe in.
OSR: Did you face any challenges when creating Suspicion Today, and how did you overcome them?
D’Arsie: I don’t remember the problems, but I think just chipping away at things little by little is probably how we overcame things.
OSR: What do you hope people take from Suspicion Today and your music in general?
D’Arsie: We hope Suspicion Today gives people joy and excites them in the same way other people’s music makes us feel that sense of urgency and like-mindedness.
OSR: If you had to choose a favourite and a least favourite track from the album, which songs would they be?
D’Arsie: That’s really tricky, when you spend so much time with them you become fond of all of them 😁. I really enjoy ‘Sunday Suits’, ‘Meant Well’ and ‘Synthetic Love’. I really quite enjoy playing those ones live and I think that’s a big part of the whole thing.
OSR: What is the most exciting thing about being a musician in today’s digital world?
D’Arsie: I feel that the most exciting thing about being a musician in today’s digital world is probably being in the studio writing songs and especially performing them live. All the tangible things that are at the heart of what being an artist is.
OSR: What does music mean to you?
D’Arsie: Pretty much everything really. I mean great songs and great bands truly transcend time and when I find something that really connects or does something to me I feel like I need to spread the word as far and wide as possible. Bands and music that we believe in are just so important to us and there’s just so much of it that makes us happy.
OSR: What is the most stressful moment of your career so far?
D’Arsie: Not so much stressful but sometimes anxiety about trying to express something; but overall it’s such a blessing to be able to make things that satisfy something inside. Collaborating with people to make something come into existence is satisfying I guess in most things in life.
OSR: What can we expect from Dream Pony in the future?
D’Arsie: We’re working on another album at the moment and putting some shows together so I guess just getting on doing the things we love to do. The plan is to try and tour as far and wide as possible.
