A Chat with Chloe Mogg (31.10.23)

Fusing various genres and sounds, singer-songwriter Chloe Mogg oozes diversity, originality and bright colours of insatiable music. Vibrant and vivacious, the UK-based artist connects with audiences on an intimate level while retaining a sense of sassiness. We speak with Mogg about her debut album The Crazy One, scary experiences, musical inspiration and future plans.

OSR: A bit cliché but what drew you to music? Why did you opt to pursue a career as a musician?

Mogg: I’ve always listened to music and studied English when I was younger. I connected with literature from the first time I started writing stories in English. I was brought up with music in my house with my Dad, who is a guitarist and features on my new song ‘Parrot’ from my debut album. Music has been my passion since I can remember and has been my guiding light in so many dark moments.

OSR: What inspires you to write music?

Mogg: Personal and factual moments in life. A lot of my debut album is about growth and finding your feet in a hectic world. I try to write relatable music that people can connect to in some way.

OSR: What does music mean to you?

Mogg: Music means more to me than anything I’ve ever experienced. It’s my safe haven and somewhere I can bring my thoughts to the table and get closure.

OSR: What can you tell us about your debut album The Crazy One?

Mogg: I’ve worked on this album for the past 6 years and I can’t believe it’s finally here. It features numerous different themes but has one continual one… identity. It’s about remembering who you are, where you come from and what you want at all times. To me, this album is a reminder to anyone that you are the main character in your story – do what’s best for you.

OSR: What were the pros and cons of creating The Crazy One?

Mogg: The pros definitely outweigh the cons. I worked with some incredible musicians and engineers to make this album happen and it wouldn’t have come out the way I wanted it to without them. I owe a lot to a group called Conflict Choir, who were the backing band on my release. They really got my ideas down perfectly and helped create a sound I could only dream of. Alex Vine Ruiz, my producer and engineer, absolutely smashed it out of the park. These songs all started acoustically and have turned into band arrangements so easily with the help of his vision.

I wouldn’t say there were any cons, I’m just sad the process of creating it is over now! When can I start on my next one!? 😊

OSR: I know you’ve performed at various venues across the UK, with tons more gigs to come; but what has been your favourite show and why that one?

Mogg: I think the album launch really hit close to home. It was the best night of my life and a night I will never forget. The place was packed with appreciative people that came to witness my album be unleashed into the wild and I’m speechless still that so many people came. I think a very close second would have to be my recent hometown show in Stourport at The Swan – that was like the album launch all over again, but this time, people were actually singing the songs because the album had been out for a month!

OSR: What makes you unique as an artist?

Mogg: I think my genre as such. I refuse to be limited to one specific style in my music. I’ve always said music is like a paintbrush – you never just use one colour when you paint.

OSR: Some random questions: what has been your scariest experience ever?

Mogg: I’ve had quite a few due to health scares! I think when I had Hepatitis in the middle of Singapore is in the top slot. I didn’t know what was wrong with me at the time BUT it was just as the COVID pandemic started (I came home a week before lockdown) and all I remembered was lying in a bed with a fever of 42 degrees thinking ‘this is it’ – it was horrific. Long story short, I came home, found out it was Hepatitis and your liver count should be under 40… mine was 900. Yep, not a fun time!

OSR: If you could be a superhero, who would you like to be?

Mogg: Probably someone like Scarlet Witch, she’s badass!

OSR: What can we expect from you in the future?

Mogg: More touring and more releases! This is just the start.

OSR: Do you have any message for our readers?

Mogg: I hope you enjoy my release and it resonates with you somehow. Thanks so much for your support!
