A Chat with Cherry Bomb (17.11.22)

Raw, blunt and filled with a ton of fun, Germany-based rock band Cherry Bomb is slowly building a following with their unique sound. We speak with the group about their debut album Pandoras Box, what music means to them, future plans and much more.

OSR: How did Cherry Bomb form and what made you decide to create music?

Cherry Bomb: Well, we all known each other for years already before deciding to come back from the ashes, smoke and all that hair spray to rise from all the greats of 80s rock music – because that’s what we all love and live for musically. So no decision on creating music, everything just came naturally, and it shows in the album.

OSR: What does music mean to you?

Cherry Bomb: For all of us, music is our happy place. Not that there are no discussions at all, but no hard words or hard feelings. We’re pretty good at expressing ourselves verbally, so music is not that kind of outlet for feelings or whatever. It’s more about fun and having a great time together – especially at concerts. This energy cannot be replaced by anything else in the world.

OSR: What can you tell us about Pandoras Box? Does the album have a theme or backstory?

Cherry Bomb: Fun – that’s the theme of the album. Even though it arrived in late summer, it’s all about this great 80s summer, sun, driving in the car chasing girls attitude and feeling. And besides that, we made a little fun of hinting at other songs on the album – or even some of rock history’s great songs throughout the album. So listen carefully!

OSR: If you could change anything about the album, what would it be and why?

Cherry Bomb: We’re absolutely happy with the album and wouldn’t want it any other way. Of course, you can always put more energy into the album, but it feels like we cut it off at the right time and finished this. The energy is still a little raw, but it’s one hour of fun and some power ballads are included as well. So everyone should enjoy listening to it.

OSR: What inspires you to create music and, in particular, what inspired Pandoras Box?

Cherry Bomb: Everything around us. Actually, the song ‘First Choice’s lyrics only exists because of a running gag within the group. We won’t tell what it is, but that spark is enough of inspiration. Other songs are easier to get – you know about the story of man and woman, that’s always great inspiration for songs.

OSR: Describe Cherry Bomb in one sentence.

Cherry Bomb: Don’t be all serious in life – enjoy the cherry side of things.

OSR: If you could perform with any artist (living or dead), who would it be and why?

Cherry Bomb: One single artist – that’s almost impossible to choose, even more since we’ve always been great fans of bands. So maybe it’s the all-star group from USA for Africa – that sounds like a fun bunch to be around.

OSR: What is your deepest fear?

Cherry Bomb: The only fear we have is the same as every other guy on the planet: What if the girl says “No”?

OSR: An odd question but what song do you think describes your personalities? It can’t be one of your original songs.

Cherry Bomb: It sure must be something instrumental with a lot of changes to it and probably a really fast song. As individuals, we’re all really different. But that’s the beauty of it – as soon as the group comes together, there’s this thing happening. Off stage, we’re like these normal guys you wouldn’t expect too much from, but as soon as the group performs, you feel things clicking.

OSR: Do you have future plans as Cherry Bomb?

Cherry Bomb: Of course – we’re on to another album and hopefully a lot of stages to perform our songs.
