A Chat with Blondy (22.02.25)
With a rambunctious spirit, tender emotions, and an all-around “sing your heart out” attitude, US-based Blondy captures the core of human fragility in an evocative rush of sound. We speak with Blondy about the latest EP Imitations, musical evolution, future plans, and much more.
OSR: Cliché, but what drew you to music? Why did you choose to pursue a musical career?
Blondy: Music has always been a big aspect of my life. My mom listened to a lot of Cindy Lauper and I guess that experimentalism stuck with me. The ability to express yourself through sound is the greatest gift of all. I chose to pursue a musical career because I love making music. I could have 0 listeners, no money, no plays, and i would still be making music and releasing it. I just want people to hear the sounds I’m making because i like them and maybe someone else will too.
OSR: What does music mean to you?
Blondy: Music means everything to me. It’s the one way I can positively express myself. It’s like some people have drugs, some people have painting, some people meditate, music is my therapy. It’s what keeps me grounded. Plus it’s fun as fuck.
OSR: You recently released your EP, Imitation. What can you tell us about the EP? Is there a particular backstory or theme?
Blondy: There is very much a backstory to Imitation. I went through a very hard and confusing time in my life. I was just getting sober and dealing with all the shit that comes with that. I then met this girl that changed my worldview, but some things happened and it didn’t work out at the time. I dwelled in that for a while as I was making this album and that’s where a lot of the feelings come from. It was just raw sadness, confusion, and just being lost in what/who I am.
OSR: If you could spend the day with any musician, living or dead, who would it be and why?
Blondy: I would spend the day with Dan Barret. I wanna see how he creates and what his processes are. I think it would change how I create (for the better) completely
OSR: What do you hope people will take from your EP?
Blondy: I hope people can find themselves. I know that sounds super egotistical, but I mean that someone can realize they gotta be happy with themselves. Life isn’t always going to be good. All you have is yourself. Take care of yourself, and life gets easier.
OSR: What do you take from your new EP?
Blondy: That I have to be my own person. I’m not anyone else and I shouldn’t want to be anyone else. I also gotta stay sober. There is only pain in addiction.
OSR: We’ve seen an evolution in your music. Do you think evolution is important for musicians and why?
Blondy: Of course! Every artist starts somewhere. When I started I had no idea what I wanted to make. I just knew I wanted to make something.
OSR: Do you feel Imitation is a good representation of Blondy at the moment?
Blondy: Honestly no… but also yes. While I was going through that time in my life I changed (I believe for the better.) During that change I had made the album. I loved the songs, but I was scared to release it. It is the most genuine I’ve been in my music and I didn’t want to show people that part of me and receive hate. About a year later, I showed a few people the album and they told me I need to drop it. I then showed some more people and had even more backing behind it.
OSR: What can we expect from Blondy in the future?
Blondy: I’m already working on some crazy shit. I’ll be dropping a single called my own in the next couple of months. Just stay tuned really I have a lot of ideas for the future!
OSR: Do you have a message for our readers?
Blondy: Always support small artists. Most of my favorite artists don’t have a large following because no one reports on them. Shout out DJ Jorts, Oktotsu, Txliban tana, and shout out the Ghxuls. People gotta stop looking at follower count and just enjoy the music.
