A Chat with alberta premium (25.01.21)

Hailing from Toronto, Ontario, alberta premium brings stoner rock, metal and alternative rock together in a fuzzy ambience. We speak to the duo about their EP i wish i never started smoking, phobias, discovering new music and future plans.

OSR: How did alberta premium come about?

alberta premium: One night we were hanging out smoking cannabis and there was a new fuzz pedal in the house and it met an 8-string guitar and things sounded righteous, so we said: “let’s make a band that sounds buff.”

OSR: What can you tell us about the EP i wish i never started smoking?

alberta premium: First of all, don’t start smoking. It’s so expensive. The EP is five songs with maybe ten riffs and we wrote the whole over a weekend. It all happened so quickly that we don’t really know what the songs sound like. What can you tell us about the EP?

OSR: If you could change one thing about the EP what would it be?

alberta premium: Where do I begin? Probably want to do it over again, but I guess we’ll just have to do another EP.

OSR: What is your creative process?

alberta premium: Sativa and chatting and then we hear melodies in our minds. The rest of the work is just translating the mind melody to real melody.

OSR: What inspires you to make music?

alberta premium: The feeling of an amp. The feeling of the table shaking when those low chords hit. A great vehicle to process trauma, fun and the memories it makes.

OSR: What do you hope people take from the EP?

alberta premium: That you should never start smoking.

OSR: Do you have any phobias?

alberta premium: Big groups, public spaces, going outside and feeling dead inside.

OSR: If you could travel to any country (when the pandemic is under control, of course), where would you go and why?

alberta premium: We got married in Covid and haven’t had a honeymoon, so maybe Vegas? Rent a V8, get some potato chips and pop. Cheap motel. West Coast burgs…yum!

OSR: What do you think is the best way to discover music nowadays?

alberta premium: Submit to the machine of curation.

OSR: Do you have any future plans?

alberta premium: Open a bar called I Shall Die Here and move to Montreal. Drive a 2007 Audi A8, be in love and make more tunes.
