Third Lung – Nowhere Left To Hide (2020)

Having been described as “powerful, atmospheric, gritty and explosive”, it is no wonder Third Lung is one of the more dynamic alternative rock bands in the UK. Alright, I’ll admit there are numerous alt-rock bands from which to choose and none is better than the other; however, there are some that grab you immediately with their pure passion. Third Lung can grab you.

Based in Reading, Tom Farrelly (lead vocals and guitar), Rob Jacques (bass), Camilla Jurasek (guitar and backing vocal) and Sam Waugh (drums) make up the alternative rock band Third Lung. After a continuous run of gigs throughout 2019, including performances at Camden Rocks Festival and The Great Escape, the foursome is building a reputation for expressive and meaningful music. Obtaining support from publications like Classic Rock Magazine and BBC Introducing, the group is making strides as a prominent group in the UK rock scene.

Lyrically, Third Lung is known for approaching sociopolitical and psychological issues of the day. The latest of their released singles is ‘Nowhere Left To Hide’ – a track pushing the issue of social prejudice, political polarisation, online globalisation and self-censorship.

“There’s an ideological war taking place. We all feel it. We know, we must say the right thing! Do not commit the crime of ‘thinking out loud’ – say what you are supposed to say. In a time when self-censorship reigns supreme are we albe to contend with the most troubling issues of the day?” – Tom Farrelly on ‘Nowhere Left To Hide’.

So, we know the concept and message of ‘Nowhere Left To Hide’ is poignant, but what about the melody? Using the melodic composition of The Doors, Third Lung creates a painful, pensive but soothing track. While the vocals complement the instrumentation, I find the influence of Foo Fighters coming through in Farrelly’s movement from a Jim Morrison to Dave Grohl sound.

Moving away from the grungy single ‘Desire’, ‘Nowhere Left To Hide’ is more meaningful and slightly heavier with dynamic guitar riffs and a drumbeat to end the track. The instrumentation and vocals find a balance with the lyrical concept of the track making it easy to stay relaxed while listening to disarming political message.
