The Attic Movement – Truth Be Told (2020)

The tale begins with a young man sitting in a converted loft of a terrace house in Sheffield. The young man’s name is Matt Williams, the aim is to reignite his creative flame, the result is some of the most emotional alternative rock songs I have heard this year. The Attic Movement began a trilogy of singles in May 2019 with ‘Leave The Car’. The follow-up ‘Warm Light Of Your Love’ was released earlier this year, and the final instalment ‘Truth Be Told’ is the most recent addition to their repertoire.

Aristotle said that a whole is greater than the sum of its parts. In other words, a connection between each single entity in a whole is worth more than if the entities were viewed as single elements. This philosophical theory is evident in The Attic Movement’s trio of singles; however, each track has the emotional depth to stand up and be recognised in its own right as well.

While Williams retains a continuous melancholic lyricism over a Radiohead meets The Verve melody throughout all three songs, ‘Truth Be Told’ is the most overwhelming. With effortless vocals and heartfelt instrumentation, ‘Truth Be Told’ is in the class of Radiohead’s ‘Creep’ – a song so desperate it touches your soul and leaves you trembling from head to toe.
