A Chat with Necronata (04.06.20)

OSR: How did Necronata come about?

N: Necronata is essentially an art project inspired, funded and progressed all by myself (Brendan). I had an idea when I was at university where I wanted to hear a greater inspiration of that 2000’s style pop music fused with the punk and rock I was listening to at the time. I wrote a few synth demos after I finished uni, sent them to a mate’s band’s producer and we linked up, collaborated on that premise and here we have Necronata – a story-driven, MySpace-pop inspired rock project.

OSR: Did you always want to be a musician? Perhaps there were other ideas, like being a spy or something.

N: I definitely have always been a creative, but originally, I wanted to be a doctor or get my PhD in Entomology. I suppose one too many existential breakdowns inspired a change of heart and really I might just be too nihilistic (or stupid) to do anything but art at this point in time. Don’t get me wrong, I still have plans of going back to uni; I just need to get this creative energy out of my system.

OSR: What can you tell us about the new single ‘Diabolical’?

N: ‘Diabolical’ is the first glimpse into an overarching story told over a number of songs. In this first scene, it tells us of a girl and her friends playing with an Ouija board. They don’t take it so seriously and, much to their dismay, they invite dark forces into their lives. In the future, this girl will suffer tragedy as a result of these dark forces manifesting as human cruelty.

OSR: You also have a music video for ‘Diabolical’. What inspired the video?

N: This is definitely a question you can ask my video producer, but we collaborated and decided to do an allegorical metaphor for these ‘dark forces’ as shown as the ancient druidic rituals. We did try our best to be as agnostic with the symbolism so we don’t offend any one group, but I’ll tell you what, my mum hates it.

OSR: What can you tell us about your music videos? For instance, the recording and concept.

N: The concept truly is going to revolve around, especially for ‘Diabolical’ and future videos, single stories that provide context to the ‘dark forces’, conflict in character’s minds and allegorical horror-themed short stories. The recordings and production are done with these concepts in mind and the styles and content will change dramatically, but a comic that ties each of these videos together will be released after a number of songs are out that tells the story from start to finish.

OSR: People say one’s environment can influence their work; does being from Australia have any bearing on your music?

N: I wouldn’t say it’s Australia as a country that has any effect on my music. In my option, the local and national heavy music and pop music scene here is awfully repetitive. I felt it needed a bit of fun and freshness which is what Necronata is offering. In terms of lyrical concepts, once again, I really am just trying to tell an interesting story very much inspired by quarantine boredom and getting lost in my own fantasy worlds.

OSR: What inspires you on a personal and professional level?

N: Different things inspire me on either level. On a personal level, I am inspired by creativity, compassion and the sheer need for fun that concepts such as fantasy stories and music offers. I really do get lost in my own fantasy worlds constantly so I’m an awful worker. For my professional career, I am definitely inspired by ambition, intelligence and perfection that my mentors, advisors and producers display. The people in my life and the experiences I’ve gone through fuel my passion and ambition. At the core, I just want to dance, sing, be inspired and want others to dance, sing and be inspired through my music.

OSR: If you could perform with any artist, who would it be and why?

N: I’m really counting on someone from this band to read this, but I would love to play a show with Bring Me The Horizon. I just think they are so much fun live and I am truly inspired by their success and variation in their music while displaying their core values as artists and creatives. They are truly ahead of their time and real gatekeepers for this type of alternative music.

OSR: What is the worst haircut you have ever received?

N: I can’t believe I’m saying this on a public platform, but every haircut I receive is accompanied by a picture of Kellin Quinn because he has perfect hair; however, I often come out of the hairdresser looking like a Beatles impersonator. I’ve happily found a hairdresser that specialises in real emo/scene cuts so they are a staple from now on.

OSR: This lockdown has affected people in many different ways. How has it affected you from a personal and professional perspective?

N: From a personal and professional perspective I’ve really had to enjoy and stimulate from my own company. I’ve had to kick myself into motivation and get as much work done moving forward by myself. I do get lonely, but my ambition and goals are stronger so I’m constantly working on my craft and art as a distraction.

OSR: Where do you hope to be this time next year?

N: This time next year I hope to be rehearsing for a weekend show at the Metro Theatre knowing a solid crowd of people are excited to be seeing me perform. I would have hoped to finish my first concept of songs and am in the middle of creating my next concept.

OSR: What do you do when you’re not creating music?

N: When I’m not creating music I exercise, read or paint plastic miniatures! Always working on one goal or project.
