A Chat with Brion Starr (08.04.19)

Wonderfully eccentric with a style reminiscent of David Bowie, Brion Starr is a performer without boundaries. We were fortunate enough to catch up with Starr and have a brief chat. Talking about his upcoming album Global Identity, his latest single, and plans for the future, here is what he had to say:

OSR: What is the single ‘The Heart is a Loaded Gun’ about?

BS: ‘The Heart Is A Loaded Gun’ has more than one meaning. It is important to seek multiple meanings.

OSR: What is your upcoming album Global Identity about?

BS: Global Identity is an album in a very traditional sense, it should be listened to straight through at a high volume. It covers a lot but is mostly a reflection on moving into a very uncertain future. I’d say it takes place in the near future but it seems that the future is already here.

OSR: Did it take a long time to write Global Identity?

BS: The majority of the writing for GI was done in a period of about a year and a half. Some of the ideas go back much further than that.

OSR: What inspired you to write your album Global Identity?

BS: I’m not sure I felt particularly inspired other than to tell a story. This is just what I do.

OSR: You just finished off a tour with The Chills. Were there any memorable experiences?

BS: Detroit!

OSR: Do you enjoy touring and which is your favourite country to date?

BS: Our Japan leg was perfect.

OSR: Do you have a musical background?

BS: I’ve been playing since I thought I could.

OSR: Who inspires you to make music on a professional and personal level?

BS: Myself and a very few close friends, I suppose.

OSR: What is the strangest question you have ever been asked in an interview?

BS: Do you want to go to the bathroom?

OSR: I saw that you’re also an actor – that is very cool. What have you done acting-wise?

BS: I’ve been forced to take on the role of a musician for now. I am writing a film which will begin production in 2020. I am very excited about that.

OSR: What are your plans for the future?

BS: The sister album of GI will be out at the end to this year, so we want to hit the road again. Go to France to record another album, hit the road a bit more, make a film. Try to balance all that with a meaningful home life and relationships.

OSR: Do you have any message for your fans and potential fans reading this interview?

BS: Thank you.
