Alwyn Morrison – The City (2025)
New York City – a city of outstanding duality where dreams collide with reality; the good meets the bad; the tragic can allude to triumph; a city that never sleeps as residents take on the world with their hardened attitudes and softer hearts. It is in New York City that we meet singer-songwriter Alwyn Morrison. Come with us as we delve into his debut single, ‘The City’.
Recorded and produced with Michael Carey, ‘The City’ has Morrison saunter through fields of rock and pop blending pop’s infectiousness with the hard-headed “in your face” attitude of alternative rock. Dragging us back to the 90s with vintage rushes of pop-rock, ‘The City’ is a sophisticated breath of nostalgia; however, the retro vibes entwine with a contemporary edginess.
For me, the most impressive aspect of the track’s instrumentation is not its harmonic blend of bold bass and crashing drums, but the soaring guitar slicing through with hits of old-school classic rock in the moving symphony. Moreover, the grittiness of ‘The City’ might encapsulate the complexities of reality in a challenging city; however, there is a rich embrace oozing from Morrison’s rich, albeit gruff, vocals prompting hope, empowerment, and a dingy positivity. Morrison explains:
“This song is a direct reference to New York City, where I live, but it is really about any city or any place where someone feels like they belong there, and don’t at the same time. In New York, there is this inexplicable feeling of wanting to stay in the city in spite of its challenges… New York is tough, and it is, I truly believe, a city that will break one apart, but it will also put us back together and make us strong…”
Dashingly handsome as he is with a smile to win hearts, Alwyn Morrison is more than a pretty face with a good voice, and ‘The City’ proves his depth and intelligence as an artist. This is Morrison’s debut single, and he is one to watch! Let us hope he hasn’t peaked with ‘The City’, but I feel the best of Morrison is yet to come.
