Awaiting Abigail – Falling Under (2024)

Originating as the reunion of three high school friends who played in bands together in the 90s, James Smith (guitar), Laurie Barnett (bass), and Heather Hammonds (drums) drew together their veteran musical magic as part of the hard rock group Awaiting Abigail. The other 50% of the six-piece includes father-daughter duo Mike Tolfa (guitar) and Kari Tolfa (keys); the final piece of the puzzle is vocalist and frontwoman Abigail Hill who Smith met in 2024 and immediately knew she was the person to lead Awaiting Abigail.

Considering the burgeoning hard rock band technically came together last year, Awaiting Abigail is by no means a minnow in the sonic shark pool. If they were, then they’re that bright, shiny, agile little fish darting between the sharks with cheeky eagerness. Join us as we dive headfirst into their single ‘Falling Under’.

Following the well-received single ‘Bad Mind’ and preceding the critically acclaimed ‘I Hate You’ and ‘People Pleaser’, listening to ‘Falling Under’ is like stepping into the centre of a sonic hurricane with kaleidoscopic insanity twirling all about. Reminiscent of Halestorm and Evanescence, ‘Falling Under’ flutters with delicate haunting locked in a heart-pumping rush of hard rock meets melodic metal.

From one side, pounding drums crash with the bold bass slicing through the waves; the soaring guitars add heaviness to the track with hints of keyboard pecking at the melody. Interestingly, just as ‘Falling Under’ is weighty with dark grittiness bursting from the track, there is a soothing calm within the chaotic sonic mire. For me, Hill’s vocals are not only the entwined silver thread of music slithering through the melody. It is the shimmering ribbon binding the instrumentation in its harmonic symphony.

While I was immediately reminded of Evanescence with ‘Falling Under’, the sophistication and enigmatic sound of Awaiting Abigail stands tall among established melodic metal artists. Soul-stirring and heart-melting, ‘Falling Under’ wriggles into your ears, rocks about your brain, sends shivers down your spine and leaves you gasping for breath with the elegant but eerie tune. This is my introduction to Awaiting Abigail, and I am eager to hear more! Highly recommended!
