Deltawelle – My Own God (2024)

In our 2023 interview with Deltawelle, guitarist and frontman Franz Schneeweiß explained: “…with music, you can conserve the things going on in your mind. You can express inner conflicts that are sometimes not possible to talk about…” – this is exactly what the German group Deltawelle is all about. A way of “…describing a status of existing that is between dreaming and living…”, Deltawelle eagerly tackles the profoundness of life, emotional consequences, and exploration of human existence with their moving melodies. Join us as we delve into the group’s latest release, My Own God.

Following the well-received 2023 EP, Sentiments, My Own God is a four-track package of sonic obscurity. Elements of Deltawelle’s signature synth-pop meets new wave sound are evident; however, their unconventional eclecticism diversifies from post-punk ‘Mrs Tuttle’ to underlying tinges of funk in ‘We Had A Moment’. Self-produced and composed, My Own God weaves the rawness of a DIY album with the sophistication of skilled musicians.

In my opinion, Deltawelle’s music is more than a few songs blasting through my speakers; it is a vivid sonic experience. With My Own God, the lads toss you into a kaleidoscopic whirl of music with an almost weightlessness washing across your body – an existence between dreaming and living.

Opening with the title track, Deltawelle drag you back to the realm of the 1980s new wave, but not necessarily entirely new wave. A jovial lilt of synth-pop lingers in the back prompted by the twinkling synths, pulsating drums and soaring guitar. Ending on a high note, we are tossed into ‘Repetition’. Tossing you from pillar to post with the discomforting grunge-esque distortion, crashing drums lie along a bold bass with synths looping in the background. Yet, despite the tempestuous nature of ‘Repetition’, the drip of rich vocals holds you like an anchor in a raging storm.

Stepping from the spiral of ‘Repetition’, Deltawelle bring a new side to their EP in ‘Mrs Tuttle’. Still a bit avant-garde in its nature, your body moves from side to side; however, a shift of 1970s funk exudes with the rich bass and soaring guitar. This unconventional switch in sound remains in the final ‘We Had A Moment’. A rollercoaster of sound and emotion, Deltawelle takes you to synth-drive highs layered with funk-inspired lows, all bound with a hushed veil of soothing vocals.

Melodically, My Own God is intriguing, intimate and insatiable, but further depth is heard in the lyrics and themes. Touching on the “…recurring repetitions that life brings with it… to a time of rest and relaxation…”, Deltawelle find positivity and celebrates life in all its grit and glory.
