Shape Of Water – Blinding Lights (2024)

Known for their hard-hitting genre-diverse music, UK-based group Shape Of Water is anything but pedestrian. Traipsing across various realms of rock, an experimental fusion of electronica, hard rock, alternative rock, and synth-driven indie-rock appears in Shape Of Water’s unconventional sonic tapestries. This is my introduction to the trio, but for some reason listening to the band’s music is comfortable, charming and like holding the hand of an old friend instead of a new acquaintance. Join us as we take a gander at one of their more recent releases, ‘Blinding Lights’.

One of the various covers of 2024, Shape Of Water presents their version of The Weeknd’s single ‘Blinding Lights’. Similar to the haunting cover of Sting’s ‘Russians’, ‘Blinding Lights’ also wriggles into your brain with an intoxicating factor; however, ‘Blinding Lights’ goes a step further than sticking in your brain. The best way to describe the track’s sound is more than words or simple listening, it is an experience to be felt.

Twirling about in a blinding rock-inspired sonic whirlpool, you feel lost in kaleidoscopic madness. Rossano Capriotti’s bold bass shines with Luca De Falco’s soaring guitars as Tom Moks’ drums pulsate in the background. Capriotti’s shimmering synths slide along the melody offering a vintage synth-rock tone; but, as much as the track leans toward vintage vibes, a contemporary edge kicks in making ‘Blinding Lights’ familiar and refreshingly new.

Eager to explore various styles and sounds across genres – in fact, defying genres entirely – Shape Of Water is obscure, unique and inimitable. To illustrate musical diversity and show another facet of Shape Of Water’s personality, the trio look at The Weeknd’s ‘Blinding Lights’. The group explain:

“Our cover of ‘Blinding Lights’ by The Weeknd represents our admiration for a song with an incredibly modern and captivating sound. We felt it aligned seamlessly with the direction of our new music, making it a natural choice to reinterpret through the lens of Shape Of Water.”

Sincere, heartfelt and endearing in its raucous rush of rambunctious sound, Shape Of Water adds an intoxicating twist to The Weeknd’s ‘Blinding Lights’. If you didn’t know it was a cover, you would assume this is an original piece of fantastic music. I cannot wait for more from the talented group.

In addition to the single, Shape Of Water released an official music video for ‘Blinding Lights’. You can view the video below or on their YouTube channel.
