Little Juke – When The Sea Came To Tea (2024)
Over the past year, there is one band that has progressed from “newbies to watch” to established pioneers in the UK indie-rock scene; the band is Little Juke. Quickly earning a reputation for engaging, enthusiastic, energetic melodies coupled with powerful lyrics, the West Midlands foursome quickly turned heads far beyond their UK borders. We discovered Little Juke with their single ‘Down The Rabbit Hole’, and today we dive into their new single ‘When The Sea Came To Tea’. Join us, won’t you?
Following the well-received singles ‘No Illusions’ and ‘Down The Rabbit Hole’, Alex Ohm (vocals and guitar), Stephen Ashford (guitar), Hannah Maiden (bass) and Tom Crowson (drums) dip into the realm of mental health in ‘When The Sea Came To Tea’. Drifting from the high-powered intensity of previous tracks, Little Juke adopts a softer, soothing, more laidback gentleness in their new single. Yet, just as the band show a softer side to their identity, an intense intimacy remains within the alternative rock meets indie-rock sound.
Leaning back to the alternative rock tones of The Verve, ‘When The Sea Came To Tea’ oozes the nostalgic whimsy of 1990s rock splendour; however, as there is a vintage style in the track, its overall message transcends time embodying the timeless challenge of anxiety, uncertainty, and confusion. The thing is, while the waves of guitar, drums and bass capture feelings of doubt and tragedy, hopeful optimism and empowerment are riding the crest of that sonic wave. Frontman Alex Ohm explains:
“’When The Sea Came To Tea’ is a metaphor for dealing with anxiety and uncertainty; how you get over that. It’s also about people who get you through the hard times – friends and family…”
Sincere, introspective and heart-warmingly honest, ‘When The Sea Came To Tea’ is another glimpse into the natural musical talent of Little Juke. Alex Ohm shares that he is “…proud of this song…” and I completely understand why. I cannot wait for Little Juke’s upcoming album, Departures from the State of Mind, set for release in February 2025.
