Andi Fins – Only A Kiss (2024)
Unafraid to delve into the complexities of humanity, singer-songwriter Andi Fins takes reality, tears it apart, celebrates the good and, oddly, celebrates the bad. Finding the beauty in tragedy, while retaining the vulnerability of a tumultuous affair, Fins likens his songs to “the missing chapters of life’s unwritten book”. As with the kaleidoscopic swirl of the past, present and being, Fins’ music is eclectic and kaleidoscopic pushing the boundaries of typical genres. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Only A Kiss’.
Following the well-received singles ‘You Need A Friend’ and ‘i want i want’, ‘Only A Kiss’ blends upbeat electronica with vintage funk in a psychedelic rush of indie-pop. Layering a soaring guitar atop bold beats, ‘Only A Kiss’ sends you travelling along a heart-racing sonic river; however, just as the track incorporates pulsating beats, the keyboards slide along with a simultaneous urgency and soothing.
Sprinkling some magic dust across the melody, ‘Only A Kiss’ is filled with hope, turmoil, vulnerability, optimism, darkness and light – all wrapped in a vintage funk-inspired sound. Yet, for me at least, it is Andi Fins’ dulcet vocals upping the ante in ‘Only A Kiss’. Soft and serene, his distinctive tone calms one’s emotion, but there is an intimate intensity wafting from its haunting fragility. Oscillating between light and dark in all aspects, the duality of ‘Only A Kiss’ is a testament to Fins’ innovation, originality and obscurity.
Melodically, the track is sensational, but it is the lyricism that enhances its weightiness. Fins explains:
“The modern fairy tale of a city stroller: it’s only a kiss and I’m going to stay alive. ‘Only A Kiss’ tells how longings oscillate between fire and ice in the metropolis of despair. The planned life model of freedom reluctantly turns out to be a permanent pressure to perform. The incessant beat pushes away the glass coffin of isolation and the guitar hook and a rescue kiss could be the ticket to a golden future.”
