Metal Bubble Trio – Love, Please Don’t Be Long (2024)

While Andrew Dost is already a name known internationally with his critically acclaimed group Fun, it is his new project that captures our eyes and ears. 10 years or so following the well-received Fun singles, Dost felt a desire to shift from indie-pop meets indie-folk tunes embracing something more eclectic, experimental and unconventional. The lighter indie-pop sound lingers in the background, but Metal Bubble Trio burns with individuality and avant-garde dabbing at psychedelic, jazz-tinged, bossa nova vibes. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Love, Please Don’t Be Long’.

Alright, so the band’s name might be Metal Bubble Trio but there is nothing metal about this 12-piece group. Not a metal music group and hardly glancing at the restrictions iron places about a certain space – Metal Bubble Trio is fluid, fanciful, and off-kilter with its glimmering sheen of obscurity. Moreover, it’s no trio; not by a long shot. Instead, Dost is joined by a plethora of enigmatic artists inserting individuality with a cohesive, harmonic symphony.

Joined by a collection of talented artists each bringing diverse influences, ideas and experiences, ‘Love, Please Don’t Be Long’ is versatility and innovation wrapped in a sensational melodic package. With Evan Smith, Seth Bernard, Matt Joynt, Chris Hatfield, Jordan Becket, Woman Believer, as well as rapper The MIND, and one of Dost’s music students, Maia Rowen, we have a lot to work with. Moreover, magical sprinkles come in way of producer Ben Cohen.

Musicians noted; let’s take a gander at ‘Love, Please Don’t Be Long’ itself.

Following the nostalgic indie-folk ballad ‘Cucumber’, ‘Love, Please Don’t Be Long’ opens with the idea of Americana, but the song slithers to an indie-folk meets folk-rock flutter as it progresses. Similar to ‘Cucumber’, the new track is like taking a refreshing gulp of clean, pure air in its mellifluous soundscape. In parts, I find the song slightly haunting; however, a charming slip of bold guitars, pulsating drums, and percussion has one drifting into a warm embrace with a cheery, blissful grin.

“This song took shape during a very happy moment in a relationship – we found something very good and easy, and as I say in the song, “You, me, and the dog; it’s like we found a four-leaf clover in the lawn”. It’s nice to be so close and comfortable with someone that even when they go to the grocery store, you look forward to their return and make sure their water glass is full…” – Andrew Dost on ‘Love, Please Don’t Be Long’
