Sophie Jones – Same Old Lie (2024)

Despite this being my introduction to singer-songwriter Sophie Jones, the young artist has been wading the music industry waters for a few years already. Established as an enigmatic character on the UK life music scene, her presence is felt through electric, enthusiastic and confident performances; however, the studio releases turn heads internationally. Reaching beyond her British borders, Sophie Jones intoxicates audiences as part of the duo The Undecided and as a solo artist. The latest addition to her solo project is ‘Same Old Lie’.

Following her well-received 2023 single ‘Ready To Run’, Sophie Jones strolls into 2024 with her new track ‘Same Old Lie’. As of 2023, Jones seemingly releases a single track per year – although this may just be according to Spotify. From the 2022 ‘WERE NOT THE SAME’ to ‘Ready To Run’, she upped the pace leaning toward a pop-punk/pop-rock tone from a lighter pop-rock sound. The new single sees Jones step down in tempo, attitude and style; but, while the tone is softer and slower, the weightiness of ‘Same Old Lie’ exceeds any previous material.

Produced with Luke Anthony Owens at Dusk Till Dawn Studios, ‘Same Old Lie’ is a shining concoction of bold bass, crashing guitars and a soaring guitar melded in a kaleidoscopic melody. The single shows all the markings of a 90s-esque pop-rock ballad, but a contemporary alternative rock vibe has the track threading through generations, styles and audiences. Moreover, the duality we hear through the retro and modern-day cohesion exudes from almost every chord of ‘Same Old Lie’.

Production-wise, Owens sprinkles sophisticated magic dust across the tune, but there remains a sense of wistful rawness and poignant yearning. Jones’s rich vocals offer bold maturity, but fragility peaks from the tender, soul-stirring, heart-breaking lyricism. Duality with individuality; collision with cohesion; tenderness with resilience – ‘Same Old Lie’ oscillates between good and bad, tragic and triumphant, and confidence in chaos.

As I mentioned, this is my introduction to Sophie Jones. Based on this, I am eager to hear more from the talented musician and insist you keep your ears open as well!
