Track of the Day: Lemon Power – I’m An Animal (2024)
Expect the unexpected – that’s what I say about the UK-based duo Lemon Power. While one might lean toward an alternative rock label with the pair, it’s hardly possible to truly categorise them. With bold brashness and intricate intensity, Lemon Power taps into various flavours of rock concocting a shimmering brand of grunge, alt-rock, indie-rock and some other stuff.
Technically founded pre-pandemic, Lemon Power burst onto the UK music scene with high-powered melodies and a “powerful vision at its core… offering an experience that’s both visceral and visionary.” In 2022, their debut single ‘Mantra’ sent shockwaves through the streaming world reaching audiences far beyond their British borders (or at least according to Spotify, that is). A couple of years later, Lemon Power released the critically acclaimed ‘Blackout’ followed by the single of the hour, ‘I’m An Animal’.
Co-produced with Matt Jaggar and Cicely Balston (mastering), ‘I’m An Animal’ shifts from the vintage grunge ‘Blackout’ to an up-tempo, toe-tapping, hip-swaying shiver of “twirl about ‘cos it’s so good” blend of funk, indie-rock, psychedelic rock and indie-pop. While the various songs stand alone in their individual genres, one element remains: a raucous dragging back to the 70s and 80s rock scene.
Fusing the styles of Serena Alboni (guitar and vocals) and Alessandro Benetazzo (bass), with musicians Alex O’Hare (drums) and Stefan Martini (synths), ‘I’m An Animal’ is a rush of bold beats, crashing drums, soaring guitars and twinkling synths bringing a psychedelic sheen to the track. For me, listening to ‘I’m An Animal’ is like walking through a hazy sonic forest with heavy fog tingling your skin as fairies flutter with their flighty, multi-coloured, joyful but mischievous nature.
While the song has high-powered energy and electricity about it, ‘I’m An Animal’ is soothing and warm. Alboni’s vocals travel across that sonic forest binding everything with a silvery bow harbouring charming comfort across the lyrical desire to “…reflect the longing to escape and redefine oneself…”
Sincere, sentimental, honest and rather intoxicating, Lemon Power’s ‘I’m An Animal’ is a song I can have on repeat without any qualms. I highly recommend the pair to everyone everywhere – you won’t regret it.
