Josh Rifkin – Lancaster Road (2024)

Josh Rifkin’s Lancaster Road is the kind of album that feels like flipping through an old photo album: nostalgic, tender, and deeply personal. Anchored in Rifkin’s signature singer-songwriter style, the album pairs introspective lyrics with warm, soulful melodies that linger in your mind long after the final track ends. This isn’t just music; it’s an experience.

The album kicks off with its title track, a stunning tribute to Rifkin’s late father. The understated instrumentation allows his heartfelt lyrics to take centre stage, creating a track that is both intimate and universal. ‘Memorial Day’ adds a whimsical touch with its breezy rhythm and lush harmonies. Every song feels carefully curated, like chapters in a well-crafted novel, each one building upon the last.

In Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Grammy-winning producer Leonardo Marques guided the album’s creation. Rifkin worked with a house band of brilliant South American musicians for two life-changing weeks while recording fundamental tracks at Marques’ Ilha do Corvo studio. Rifkin resumed working on the record with producer and long-time partner Keith Armstrong after returning to Los Angeles.

The guest features on the album are a highlight. Jennifer Souza’s haunting vocals on ‘Questions’ and Niki J Crawford’s gospel-infused contributions bring new dimensions to Rifkin’s work. These collaborations never overshadow Rifkin’s own artistry; instead, they elevate the album’s emotional depth.

Ultimately, Lancaster Road is a celebration of life’s dualities – joy and sorrow, past and present. Rifkin’s ability to transform personal memories into universal truths is a rare gift, and this album feels like a love letter to both his listeners and the moments that shape us all.
