Dom Brinkley – Australia (2024)

Just over a year ago, singer-songwriter Dom Brinkley made our acquaintance with his single ‘Bad Wine’. We were a bit late to the party, but now we are part of an international audience that is astounded by Brinkley’s music time and time again. Sauntering across various genres from funk and soul to rock and folk, the Australia-based musician is anything but pedestrian as we expect the unexpected with each release. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Australia’.

The second single since his relocation to Mparntwe/Alice Springs, ‘Australia’ “feels like the beginning of a new musical chapter in the outback…”; however, just as Brinkley takes one path from the crossroads, there is a signature tone in his innovative sound. Odd to say considering the diversity of Dom Brinkley, but a particular lilt makes his music distinctive within its eclecticism. ‘Australia’ offers a concoction of indie-rock with a hit of psychedelic rock, pop, and an almost Australian-y folk clinging to the sides.

Produced with Jack Benfold, ‘Australia’ is filled with duality. From the bold bass, guitars and drums to the delicate shift of keys and saxophone, the track is both weighty and vulnerable. Joined by longtime bandmates Lucy Makowski, Miles Thomas, and Pat Brinkley, the rawness of ‘Australia’ swims a soothing charm bound by Dom Brinkley’s laidback vocals. Tough but gentle; gruff but smooth; harsh but endearing – the new single captures various sentiments in a four-minute symphony.

The melody itself speaks to your soul calming the waves of one’s heart; however, it is the overall theme that adds weightiness to a powerful tune. An ode to Australia itself, the music perfectly aligns with the country’s strength, joy, hope and trials. Brinkley explains:

’Australia’ is… dedicated to seeking healing and transformation in the vast Australian landscape; exploring how the concept of the Australian ‘bush’ both quietens and intensifies the mind… from desolation and loneliness to peace and wonder… the track seeks to further emphasise the Australian identity…”
