Raw Sienna – Motel (2024)
Founded about seven years ago by a group of artists eager to make their mark on the rock music scene, Raw Sienna hails from Freiburg bringing raw rock with them. While the underlying signature sound harkens to a rock-inspired, guitar-driven flash of noise, Raw Sienna is far from pedestrian. Sauntering across genres like pop, emo, punk, funk, and even jazz, their musical concoction has a unique glimmer, demanding attention for its eclectic shine. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Motel’.
Taken off their well-received 2024 EP, Rumination of Counterculture, ‘Motel’ is a kaleidoscopic twirl of alternative rock, punk and even a peek of funk twinkling in the background. Combining a bold bass with pounding drums, scorching guitars and an interspersed ping of keyboards, the single has a reckless abandon slicing through the melody; however, just as it is a messy mash of alternative rock chaos, there is a soothing lilt in the track. A particular shout-out to the soaring guitar solo about midway through ensnaring our senses with elegant ease.
Produced with Stefan Walter and Jason Perry, ‘Motel’ is simultaneously heavy and confident, while retaining a raw vulnerability in the melody. The rich vocals ooze with a sense of empowerment, yet there is a delicate fragility interwoven. Melodically, ‘Motel’ is fantastic; but it is the poetic lyricism that makes it sensational.
Inspired by life in its totality, Raw Sienna delves into weighty issues like mental health, social justice and tolerance – ‘Motel’ explores the essence of self-discovery and resilience. A persistent description of “…the feeling of never really arriving at your destination and ever only feeling comfortable in one place for a while… a song about a certain emotional ambivalence, about being torn between different mutually exclusive worlds that you want to belong to and the struggle of being unable to find yourself because of this…”
Sincere, sentimental, honest and introspective, Raw Sienna makes us look inside, open Pandora’s box on inner turmoil, and let everything out in a raw alternative rock tune.
