Jos Azuriz – Back Of My Head (2024)

Known for her poetic wit, sharp lyrics, moving melodies, and natural musical talent, Jos Azuriz captures the hearts of any audience in and beyond her US borders. An established figure in the New York music scene, Azuriz is a keyboardist and backing vocalist for various artists including Colorjoy, Bri Suarez, and more. Yet, it is her solo project that draws our gaze. Her first step into the streaming world (or at least according to Spotify), ‘Back Of My Head’ is Azuriz’s debut track. Come with us as we delve into the intriguing release.

Ultimately an insatiable pop track, ‘Back Of My Head’ is a light-hearted, fun, playful melody made for pop audiences; however, Azuriz is no one-trick pony. Concocting indie-pop, synth-pop and even a slip of rock rolling along the melody, the single is smooth and silky with a sheen of heavier indie clinging to the edges.

Joined by producer Ethan Saffold, ‘Back Of My Head’ is not only a combination of pop-inspired sounds – it is an anthemic song transcending time and distance. It whispers a breath of life into 80s synth-pop, but with the charm of 90s pop and indie-rock, then a push of 21st-century pop flooding through the track. Bridging the decades with silvery music, ‘Back Of My Head’ captures the hearts of generations showcasing the power of raw music.

The melody itself is intriguing, but it is the lyricism that enhances the ageless quality of the track. Co-written with her best friend Bri Suarez, ‘Back Of My Head’ is a tale of unrequited love and its complexities. With a personal narrative, Azuriz shares a story of “…the universal yet often awkward experience of developing a crush on a friend…” It’s all about them not feeling the same, just wanting you as a buddy.

Intimate with tragic vulnerability oozing through Azuriz’s rich vocals, ‘Back of My Head’ is relatable; however, amidst the sad lyrics, a layer of introspection exists offering solace instead of pure heartache. If this is anything to go by, I cannot wait for more from this talented singer-songwriter.
