Eli Annina – Lightning In The Bottle (2024)
From her 2019 singles ‘LUV’ and ‘Hush Hush’ to 2024’s ‘Euphoric Emotion’ and ‘Lightning In The Bottle’ (the song we’re about to review), Eli Annina has entranced the masses with her intoxicating music. While described as pop music, the UK-based Annina blends elements of electropop, synth-pop and alternative pop in a shining musical potion. While this is my introduction to the solo artist, Annina is no newbie to the scene having established a name for herself with various girl groups in Helsinki; however, it is her solo project that has her carving a niche in the atmospheric dance scene. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Lightning In The Bottle’.
Following her well-received single ‘Euphoric Emotion’, ‘Lightning In The Bottle’ is another shimmering of electropop wrapped in a commercial pop wrapper. Yet, unlike ‘Euphoric Emotion’, Annina brings a more toe-tapping, upbeat, smile-inducing vibe to ‘Lightning In The Bottle’. Yes, her established pop sound breathes from the track, but there is something oddly alternative about the new song. It is an indescribable boldness, passionate eclecticism, powerful obscurity – a certain je ne sais quoi that I’m pleased to embrace.
Produced with Cameron Collie (who also co-wrote the song alongside Laurence Hobbs and Eli Annina), ‘Lightning In The Bottle’ finds the balance between sophisticated elegance and innocent youthfulness. As the rich vocals slide across the melody, its synth-driven sound glistens with a vibrant, almost vividly kaleidoscopic tone. For me, it is not only the smooth flow of sound that makes the song soul-stirring, but the pulsating beat pounding in the back adds a kick of heart-stopping insatiability.
Despite being a well-known artist, ‘Lightning In The Bottle’ is, as I mentioned before, my introduction to Annina; and what an introduction. From the mellifluous rush of soothing music to the sassy sensuality of Annina’s vocals, the single is anthemic, ferocious and made to stick in your brain for days to come.
