Lips of Strangers – Motion (2024)
With several notches on their belts, the members of Lips Of Strangers are no newbies to the music industry. From founder Spencer Miles (vocals) to Kenny Bernard (drums), and producers Brian Squillace and Andrew Maury, Lips of Strangers incorporates various styles, experiences and sounds in its diverse background. While eager to enjoy the present, Miles and his crew are constantly looking to the future; to bring something new, exciting and eclectic to listeners. Savouring various flavours of pop – from indie-pop to pop-punk – the US-based group pushes its borders with several new singles. Come with us as we delve into the debut track, ‘Motion’.
Preceding their sophomore single ‘Tokyo’, Lips of Strangers adopt what might be labelled as an avant-garde brand of alternative pop in ‘Motion’. Yet, just as one could potentially categorise ‘Motion’, with each chord and progression the band showcases diversity in sonic movement.
Soft and caressing, a synth-driven cloud carries listeners across a hazy pool of kaleidoscopic sound; however, Bernard’s pulsating drums insert a harder beat beneath the track. A sliver of 80s synth pop shimmers across the track, but weightiness exists with a hearty classic rock guitar rearing its head in the storm before disappearing in the mist.
Rich and bold with a hit of rock bursting through, Lips of Strangers brings various locks of pop and rock together in a three-and-a-half-minute melody. The thing is, despite the profoundness of the instrumentation, Miles’ soothing vocals bind everything in a bright gold thread presenting intimate intensity with carefree innocence. His dulcet tone finds the duality between confidence and fragility, euphoria and melancholy, boldness and vulnerability – all in a single song.
The melody itself is intriguing with the members showing their mastery of enigmatic music; however, it is the lyricism that brings a gleam of seriousness to the silvery tune. Dipping into the complexities of human emotion, Miles explores “themes of longing and desire…singing about a love that feels out of reach…”
Sincere, sentimental and laced with heartfelt tenderness, Lips of Strangers sets the stage for a surreal musical journey with ‘Motion’.
