The Stray Pursuit – I Don’t Know (2024)
Born of a serendipitous meeting on an unexpected bus ride, Aaron Morgan and Fred Wilkinson forged an unexpected bond with their love for music. Despite playing in separate bands (and thus being rivals of sorts), the pair’s chemistry became apparent during a jam session. Add the natural talent of guitarist Dylan Evans and drummer Ben Lewis to Morgan’s vocals and Wilkinson’s bass; well, there you go, it’s The Stray Pursuit. Following a brief Covid pandemic-induced hiatus, the Welsh foursome returned to the studio with the 2023 EP Domino Effect. Today, we listen to their latest single ‘I Don’t Know’.
Following their well-received single ‘Run’, The Stray Pursuit retain a strong alternative rock flavour in ‘I Don’t Know’; however, just as their distinctive sound is emerging, a slip of indie-rock with shivers of pop-rock flutter along the tune. Produced with Romesh Dodangoda at Longwave Studios in Cardiff, the Swansea natives combine crashing drums, bold bass and soaring drums in a kaleidoscopic sonic tapestry. Reds, blues, greens and purples burst forth, while Morgan’s rich vocals weave across with a sparkling silvery shine.
One aspect I find intriguing about ‘I Don’t Know’ is the threading of different decades of rock in a few minutes. Adding a vintage rush of 90s indie and alternative rock, a rush of old-school vibes breaks through, but the contemporary edginess showcases how music transcends generations.
While the track is masterful in its sophisticated production, it is the weighty lyricism that adds profoundness. Tapping into feelings of vulnerability, fragility and turmoil, ‘I Don’t Know’ explores feelings of uncertainty reflecting on the past for an empowering future. The band explains:
“’I Don’t Know’ is an introspective alternative rock song that captures the feeling of longing and uncertainty. The lyrics reflect on past experiences and challenges ahead in life. This song resonates with anyone navigating life’s complexities while seeking connection and understanding.”
