Daph Veil – I Don’t Need You (Someday) (2024)
While Daph Veil lingers between post-punk and alternative rock with a wash of new wave shimmering along, it is almost impossible to truly define the US-based artist. The brainchild of musician Paula Laubach, Daph Veil presents a sound that lives within a dark wave-inspired tone but leaps forth with obscurity. Not one to be pigeon-holed, a mist veils your eyes, and you seek to learn what treasures lie behind this sonic ambience. Come with us as we take a step toward treasure with Daph Veil’s single ‘I Don’t Need You (Someday)’.
‘I Don’t Need You (Someday)’ may be the debut single for Daph Veil, but musician Paula Laubach has experience with hard rock/metal cover bands and plays bass for alternative rock group Die Hard Habits; it is, however, her solo single that catches our fancy today. Recorded and produced at the Ice Cream Factory Studio, ‘I Don’t Need You (Someday)’ is a concoction of crashing drums (courtesy of Jeff Connor), a bold bass, soaring guitar and twinkling keys laid bare on a post-punk-filled sound.
I find it particularly interesting that while the instrumentation winds together in a harmonic whole, each element’s individuality is what makes the overall soothing ambience so exciting. Soft and mellifluous but intricate and eclectic, Daph Veil captures all raw emotion in a two-and-a-half-minute song.
While the track has a way of wriggling into your brain and shivering down your spine, a melodic haunting and almost nakedness has the barebones song flitting past your ears. It’s confident and assured; however, vulnerability and fragility add depth to the song. Penned by Rebecca Price, ‘I Don’t Need You (Someday)’ is an emotional rush of words woven through a wistful melody, but with haunting poignancy leaping from hushed vocals.
Listening to Daph Veil’s debut single, we take one step toward the sonic veil and peek beyond. What do we find? Well, it’s pretty hard to describe. The thing is, it’s a kaleidoscopic symphony that you won’t soon forget.
