Coruja Jones – Little Space (2024)

With a reputation for tender, intimate melodies that can reach into your soul, hold your heart and offer solace for any sort of situation, Coruja Jones is the musician you go to when seeking calm. The brainchild of UK-based Dan Jones, he began turning the heads of curators and listeners alike in 2019 with the single ‘The Crossing’. We’re a little late to the party, but better late than never, and our introduction is his new single ‘Little Space’.

Following his well-received track ‘The Day I Die’, Jones delves further into the realm of love, loss, and tragic yearning in ‘Little Space’. Taken from his upcoming EP, Undo – an album focusing on the “healing process in all its forms…” – ‘Little Space’ taps into the vulnerable complexities of “unrequited love for someone you never got the chance to meet…”

I’ll admit, when I read that line, I was a little confused; put it down to being a long week. The vulnerability of missing out on love with a stranger? Then I looked further and found the inspiration behind ‘Little Space’ lies in the loss of a pregnancy. With the charm and tenderness of a lullaby, Jones weaves an intricate tapestry of loss, desire, and fragile melancholy into the new single.

Joined by producer Sam Vicary, drummer Adam Dawson and guitarist Jake Stentiford, ‘Little Space’ is a rollercoaster of music and emotion. While delicate and fragile, the song is a weighty melody lining soft, calming, hushed tones with poignant profoundness in the lyricism. Jones’ gentle execution is subdued and tranquil, but vulnerability lingers in the soothing voice. Beautifully tragic, ‘Little Space’ is a deeply personal journey through love, loss and ultimately healing.
