BEX – Fly Away (2024)

With members from Ireland, Italy and Argentina, foursome BEX is truly an international band. Based in Spain, they celebrate cultural diversity, backgrounds and experiences creating a sound that is simultaneously bright joviality and profound intensity. While BEX is already colourful in the melding of cultures, their music pushes genre borders with boundary-breaking experimentalism. A concoction of soul, RnB, disco, funk, pop and rock, BEX is no one-trick pony and hardly pedestrian – then again, they only have a couple of tracks to their name.

Using their intoxicating stage presence and electric performances, BEX ensnares the senses of their audiences; however, it is the melody and not the show that intrigues us. Following the critically acclaimed singles ‘Light Stay’s On’ and ‘Freedom’, ‘Fly Away’ is the second track from their upcoming EP.

For me, listening to BEX’s music is an immersive experience to be enjoyed and not merely heard. Kaleidoscopic and soothing, BEX tips you into a swirl of sound with heady weightlessness carrying you along the wispy waves. Bryan Curtis’ drums pulsate in the background, while Hernan Fridman keeps time with a bold bass. Rebecca Houlihan binds the symphony with golden vocals and Lorenzo Spinozzi’s soaring guitar floods through with a silvery flourish. Every element is joined in perfect unity lifting your heart in the warm sonic swirl but Spinozzi’s guitar shimmers brighter than the rest in his vibrant solo, well in my opinion.

The melody itself is a giddy rush of bright lights and perfumed sounds, but it is the lyricism that gives ‘Fly Away’ greater significance. Joined in the celebration of life and love, the melody carries you and the words add joyous bliss. The band explain:

“’Fly Away’ is a heartfelt song celebrating the joy and beauty that comes from being with someone special. The track captures the essence of cherishing every moment together and the desire to escape to a world where love and happiness flourish…. It reflects the deep appreciation for a partner who makes life extraordinary and fills every moment with love and wonder…”
