Sean Kennedy – Since You Left (2024)

Wearing his heart on his sleeve, singer-songwriter Sean Kennedy is the comforting friend to share a cup of tea and slice of cake with after a heartbreaking experience. With personal narratives and intimate melodies, the US-based artist resonates with audiences across ages, distances, and all types of preferences. From his 2019 debut album Tell Me to the well-received 2024 single ‘Let It Go’, Kennedy builds strong friendships with people internationally tackling chaotic reality with underlying, harmonic soothing. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Since You Left’.

His critically acclaimed ‘Forever Us’ explored experiences of love and loss, while the following track ‘Let It Go’ tended to the wound placing a band-aid on a broken heart. ‘Since You Left’ finds the line between the two tracks reflecting on the pain of loss but simultaneously offers insight into the “struggle of moving on”.

‘Pass Me By’, the track released just before ‘Since You Left’, dropped into denial carrying one on a sonic river past the challenging situation. Interestingly, while the next track should carry a sense of acceptance, the lyricism speaks of life “not been the same since you left that day” – an attitude of raw vulnerability, fragility and pain. Then again, lingering beneath the seemingly hopeless tragedy is a hit of empowerment, optimism and light at the end of the tunnel.

Shifting from the synth-pop single, ‘Pass Me By’, Kennedy traverses across various styles of pop. Fluttering along 80s pop sounds with a hint of indie-pop clinging to the melody, ‘Since You Left’ is heavier than previous work while simultaneously lighter in its arrangement. For me, it is Kennedy’s bold vocals that act as an anchor to the kaleidoscopic melody inserting both comfort and security into a complex splash of music.
