Track of the Day: The Wattles – Fooled (2024)

Known for their insightful lyrics wrapped in infectious melodies, indie-rock band The Wattles capture originality in their music. Already an established foursome in Australia, the group has a strong following; however, it is their move to the UK that took their sound across international waters. I mean, they were already turning heads globally, but this move finds them stamping their name across the UK music scene. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Fooled’.

The title track from their highly anticipated upcoming EP, ‘Fooled’ is The Wattles’s second release in 2024. Following critically acclaimed singles ‘The Wizard’ and ‘(I Want To) Feel It All’, ‘Fooled’ finds The Wattles blending indie-rock with grunge sentiments slithering through a strong alternative rock melody. A concoction of Stuart MacPherson’s crashing drums, Charlie Watkin’s bold bass, and James Suttor’s searing guitar meld together in a harmonic symphony; however, Suttor’s guitar does add a powerful energy setting him apart for a few moments. This doesn’t by any means ignore the individual ferocity of all instruments merely, as frontwoman Lucy Murray puts it, “…really changed up the energy when James added his guitar parts…”

For me, the melody alone can stand tall as a soul-stirring tune, but Murray’s vocals bind everything with enigmatic charm. Harsh but soothing, bold but vulnerable, profound but whimsical, her voice perfectly represents the theme. She explains:

“I wrote the track a couple of years ago first on piano and then the band added their parts… The track talks about people who are obsessed with social media in quite a dystopic way and the off-putting kind of subtle nature of consumerism on these platforms.”

Some of the best things come from Australia like Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman, Shane Warne, The Bee Gees and Married At First Sight: Australia; The Wattles are set to be another fantastic wonder from Down Under.
