Rebecca Helen – Feeling This With You (2024)

While singer-songwriter Rebecca Helen decided to seriously pursue a solo career in 2019 with her pop/dance album Musical Life this was not her first encounter with music. Born to a family of music teachers, she was surrounded by music from Day 1. At age 7, the South African won her first singing award and in 2011, she formed an indie-folk band with her sisters Vanessa and Stephanie. While her earlier experiences paved the way for her current endeavour, it is her most recent single that we take a gander up (or rather listen to). The latest addition to her repertoire is ‘Feeling This With You’.

Following her well-received singles ‘Temples’ and ‘Tranquilize’, Rebecca Helen showcases her versatility within the pop genre with ‘Feeling This With You’. While her previous songs have a strong synth-driven tone, ‘Feeling This With You’ shifts back toward a bubble-gum pop sound brimming with jovial, toe-tapping, “this is so awesome” dance-ability. Self-described as “…fun and playful and the vibe feels like sunshine on a rainy day as the beat sweeps you away to another world…”

A collaboration with Sasha Ben Righini, ‘Feeling This With You’ finds a delicate line between organic and synthetic instrumentation, then blurs it in a kaleidoscopic swirl of harmonic sound. Painting a vivid image of bright summery days, bold beats pulsate beneath like a heartbeat while synths flow through the track with comfortable warmth. While, at first glance, the tune leans strongly toward synth-pop, the underlying piano and acoustic guitar kick in an indie slant.

Drawing in the happy smiles and fun of that “…sunshine on a rainy day…”, Rebecca Helen’s vocals up the ante with happy-go-lucky richness. Interestingly, while the tune is full-bodied and bold, there is a whimsical laidback nature making it easy to listen to but with confidence that makes a strong impression. Rebecca Helen described ‘Feeling This With You’ as a “…pina colada on the beat with your favourite person…” and I couldn’t agree more. I am eager to hear more from this talented musician.
