Sonny Siminski – Wishful Thinking (2024)
Staring out the window as you wait in traffic on Monday morning; standing in the grocery aisle trying to find the best deal on chocolates; putting your feet up and preparing to watch your favourite film with a cup of tea at hand. This is the average person, the average humdrum of daily life without anything extraordinary. Yet, in a simple existence, the meek can inherit the earth – or in other words, you don’t have to be the most flamboyant individual to be content or make a difference. Sonny Siminski understands this and shares his knowledge in his moving melodies.
Describing music as “a first aid kit to life’s trials and tribulations…”, singer-songwriter Siminski is inspired by human experience to create relatable tunes. This is my introduction to the UK-based artist but, just a mere second into his songs, I feel like he is an old friend stopping by for a comforting natter filled with chocolate biscuits. Following his well-received single ‘You, me, time!’, Siminski holds your hand with his track ‘Wishful Thinking’.
At the end of a long week, there is nothing better than a folk tune to bring a breath of relief to a weary soul. Self-produced, ‘Wishful Thinking’ is a soothing concoction of acoustic guitar, percussion and Siminski’s rich vocals. Barebones and stark, ‘Wishful Thinking’ has a barebones simplicity to it; however, a kaleidoscopic wash of raw emotion flutters in the soothing melody. For me, a brief listen to the single grants a warm soul-stirring nudge to a place of gentle contentment. The thing is, everything is not as it seems. A juxtaposition of laidback sounds and poignant lyricism brings profoundness to the single. Sonny Siminski explains:
“’Wishful Thinking’ is about being taken advantage of by someone you care for greatly. You know it is true but don’t want to believe it. You still live in hope that one day it will change…”
Sincere, sentimental and brutally honest, Sonny Siminski warms your heart while filling your eyes with tears in ‘Wishful Thinking’.
