Laura Dannan – Sunbeam (2024)
I once heard that the best storytellers grab your attention in the first line – one intriguing line and an audience is hooked! Laura Dannan has you hooked. With her emotional melodies and intimate narratives, all interwoven with poetic tales, the UK-based Dannan has a reputation for depth, connection, and tenderness. We came across Dannan last year with her sophomore single ‘Little Grey’, a vulnerable song about loss and yearning. Today, we drift through her latest single, ‘Sunbeam’. Join us, will you?
Following her well-received single ‘Rise’, Dannan adopts her traditional folk style with ‘Sunbeam’ in a simplistic acoustic melody. Yet, unlike ‘Rise’, ‘Sunbeam’ shifts to a more soothing, gentle and toe-tapping tone lifting our mood from vulnerable melancholy to pure joy. In the first verse, Dannan sings “Push those clouds away…”, and this perfectly describes the entire song.
Self-recorded, penned and produced, ‘Sunbeam’ oozes warm intimacy, so you feel like you’re chatting with a best friend over a cup of tea after a long, hard day. Highlighting the beauty of simplicity, the track is a harmonic combination of Alex Laurence’s of The Hanging Bandit’s acoustic guitar with light percussion slipping in adding a finger-clicking heartiness to the track. For me, however, it is not only the melody that wins my heart but the vocals.
Along with his guitar skills, Alex Laurence shares his rich vocals with an interplay between two tender, rich and bold vocals. Not necessarily a conversation but rather a charming dance with each other culminating in a powerful rush of music. As the melody twirls around in soulful serenity, Laurance and Dannan reach out to you as you dance in the ripples of sound. Happy-go-lucky with blissful tranquillity, this old-school folk single celebrates life, companionship and removes any weight that might be resting on you, perfect for a Friday.
