Carson Ferris – Ghosts (2024)

While Carson Ferris is a teenager, he has the wisdom of a sage. In his single ‘1999’, Ferris tackled the issue of “feeling out of place… feeling like you don’t belong” – might this be an old-school glean back to the “square peg in a round hole” philosophy? Well, truthfully, I’m unsure but granted the profoundness of his songs, he definitely has a one-up on understanding life compared to me and most of my friends. The latest addition to his library of common sense is the single ‘Ghosts’.

Following his well-received 2023 EP Talkin’ To You, Ferris dives further into the electronic pop scene with ‘Ghosts’. To this point, his pop meets indie-pop sound has placed him firmly alongside artists like Ed Sheeran and James Bay; however, ‘Ghosts’ leans further toward an electropop scene. The track ‘Crazy’ tinged at this upbeat, electronic change and it is with ‘Ghosts’ that Ferris takes that leap.

Recorded and produced by Matthew Parker, ‘Ghosts’ is a synth-driven single flooded with bold beats. Originally, the idea was to craft a dance track but the final tempo and feel of ‘Ghosts’ is calmer, gentler and more soothing than those tracks dominating house parties. Interestingly, while the single leans further toward synth-filled songs, Ferris’ powerful pop vocals act as an anchor in the blissful swirl of fairy lights. Even more interesting is how the rollercoaster of vocals and melody aligns perfectly with the emotional depth of the track. When speaking about ‘Ghosts’, Ferris explains:

“’Ghosts’ is a song about letting go and moving on from situations and people that aren’t good for you. In the bridge, the lyrics say that moving on is the only way things can be ok. That’s definitely true. All that holding on to things like that will do is cause more resentment… I think forgiveness is an important part of moving on, so I put a lot of emphasis on that in ‘Ghosts’. You can’t let go until you forgive, even if it seems easier to hold a grudge.
