LOVELOST – Losing Everything (2024)
It might be said we’re in the fifth wave of emo, but thanks to bands like LOVELOST it feels like a full-blown storm at sea. With their new single ‘Losing Everything’, this South Western quartet have transported me back over 20 years, whilst somehow keeping it fresh. With a sound that is of a time, yet still in my mind timeless.
‘Losing Everything’ both seethes and soothes with vocals which drift effortlessly between screaming rage and melodic contemplation of the effects of loss. The entire track is held together with a perfect rhythm, while not losing any of the chaos which makes it so exciting and I can only imagine would make them a force to be reckoned with in a live show.
For me this track is reminiscent of all British bands doing great work in the early 2000s, feeding the thriving scene I grew up in. I can hear influences from many of the bands of the era including Welsh bands, such as Funeral for a Friend and Hondo Maclean, with some American greats such as Senses Fail and Finch who had such a big influence on the scene.
Obviously, since I enjoyed ‘Losing Everything’, I had to go looking for more from LOVELOST. Thankfully their earlier singles ‘Brigthburn’, ‘Pour the Salt’ and ‘Pulling at Threads’ are more of the same solid emo, hardcore, post-hardcore, Screamo, (insert random sub-genre here), it doesn’t really matter it was all good.
Fresh of mentions from BBC introducing and making the Kerrang Top 20 tracks of the Week at the end of June, it seems like LOVELOST is receiving the credit they deserve. I personally can’t wait to see what they do next. I’m waiting with bated breath for news of new music or a tour, here’s hoping neither is far off.
