Clash Clash Bang Bang – Cold As Ice (2024)

Reaching us from the depths of space, or at least that sonic galaxy where music reigns far into the unreachable distance, Clash Clash Bang Bang sends messages of understanding, acceptance, hope and empowerment through their innovative, eclectic, boundary-breaking melodies. Drawing together natural talents for poetic storytelling and infectious tunes, the German-based group are “a spaceship crew that is going queer music to rescue the Earth…” With tender affection, but a bad-ass attitude, Clash Clash Bang Bang come in peace. Join us as we dive headfirst into their new single ‘Cold As Ice’.

I might say that ‘Cold As Ice’ is a distinctive Clash Clash Bang Bang sound, but I’m unsure if this is entirely true. Listening to previous material, specifically the critically acclaimed 2023 album Artificial Paradise, a signature avant-garde tone exists; however, each track from ‘Black Hole’ to ‘Galaxy of Loss’ illustrates diversity in the tapestry of genres smashed into one. ‘Cold As Ice’ further highlights the innovative diversity with its sparse, obscure alternative pop meets avant-garde sheen, so Clash Clash Bang Bang might be distinct in carving their niche of intricate divergence.

Blunt, brash and minimalistic, the almost harrowingly soundscape of ‘Cold As Ice’ is abrasive. Yet, while abrupt tones exist, there is a harmonic unity in the emptiness – a symphony of Faye Silkyway’s light synths, eli-N’s bold drums, and Gasher the 14th of Greenskull’s wavering guitar. Oddly, while the barrenness of the sonic forest is haunting, Lia Hell’s rich vocals add clarity to its narrative. Oscillating between light and dark, ‘Cold As Ice’ draws listeners close in a warm embrace navigating the cinematic soundscape.

On a mission to connect with others in “a world where capitalism is overcome, where community and the power of friendship reign…”, Clash Clash Bang Bang offer advice to get rid of the bad to feel whispers of good. The band explain that ‘Cold As Ice’ is “about getting aware that a loved person is an asshole and getting rid of assholes is a good way to get free”.
