GLYNMOOG – Bubblegum (2024)

With a penchant for sharing stories in eclectic dream-pop melodies, GLYNMOOG enchants listeners with surreal soulful sounds. This is my introduction to GLYNMOOG, but he has been entertaining the masses for a few years already, as a singer-songwriter, producer and film director. With the release of his critically acclaimed debut album Moon Story, released alongside the award-winning film of the same name, GLYNMOOG began turning heads far beyond his UK borders. The latest addition to his discography is the new single ‘Bubblegum’.

Following his well-received single ‘Redblock’, GLYNMOOG’s love of VGM (Video Game Music) oozes through in ‘Bubblegum’. Shifting from a somewhat darker, desperate and gritty sound in ‘Redblock’, the new track is light, jovial, upbeat and charming. Yet, just as the melody is a delicate blend of rhythmic synths and warm beats in a sea of kaleidoscopic sound, there is a hint of something more profound in the background. A slip to darker percussion with roots-tinged tones breaks through… then, GLYNMOOG raises the melody to more charming sonic swirls.

“It all started with an unexpected inspiration: the sound of bubblegum popping… I’ve poured my heart into crafting a song that can offer a moment of joy, that can transport us elsewhere for a few minutes…” – GLYNMOOG on ‘Bubblegum’

The melody is the prominent element of ‘Bubblegum’ with lyricism fluttering beneath while still standing tall in its own right. Seemingly babbling gibberish but it is the gibberish-ness that connects with listeners like a fairy singing in the back of a dream. Obscure and slightly off-kilter, then again so significant in the overall song.

In addition to the single, GLYNMOOG released an official lyric video for ‘Bubblegum’. You can view the video below or on their YouTube channel. Please note that this video uses lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.
